Well after I signed my contract I researched my new MOS, 31F (or now 25f, Network Switch Systems Operator). I originally wanted to be a 74B (25B) Information Systems Analyst. BUt the counselor at MEPS told me there were np openings. I am not sure if he was telling the truth or not, so we went down the list on the computer. I kept telling him I wanted to work with computers because that's what degree I graduated with, plus I have job experience in that area too. So I was a bit disappointed and I did not know what to do. I had my heart set on 74B. Then we came along to 31F, the title seemed like job dealing with computers, so I signed.

Anyways after I researched it, I got kind of upset at myself and the counselor. So i spoke with a Captain because I had to call him because I got some certificate and letter stating I have to call some number in 72 hours. He asked me if everything was ok. I told him my problem and he said he would look into it and get it changed. He also had to speak to my recruiter. Well I met with my recruiter yesterday, and the Captain had not spoken with him. My recruiter was not helpful to be. He said I was asking alot out of him to change my contract. I also have to push back my shipping date due to my family moving to Utah fromm Texas.

He told me he couldnt promise me anything and kept insisting that 31F dealt with computers and proceeded to show me some vids. I told him I knew that is was marketing scheme to make the job look exciting and stuff. I researched 31F on here and other boards. Basically I didn't want to deal with telecommunications. He told me I signed the contract, but I told him I know I was not obligated by that contract until I sign the contract when I ship out to basic. He was quiet after that.

I dont know what to do.. I really was gung ho about joining the Army, but this ordeal has really cut down my enthusiasm on joining now. I am leaving for Utah mid July, but I want to get everything solved b4 I leave
now I know they can't promise me a spot will open up,but the overall impression I got is you signed, I am not gonna give an effort to help you.

My question is if I cancel the contract and leave for Utah.. can I visit the local Army recruiter in Salt Lake City and still get another contract?? I asked my recruiter this, but he gave me a BS answer saying those guys in Utah wouldn't help me, only he would help me personally since he knew me longer. Also would I have to go through the entire process at MEPS once again?? I want to wait until a 74B opens up. Thanks for help and advice.

It sounds to me like your recruiter is trying to meet his quota without having to put in any extra work. If all else fails, I'd cancel the contract and go to Utah, see what the recruiters up there can do for you.

haha. you got bogarted by your recruiter and counselor. youre basically a phone line installer in garrison units, or you sit in a commo switching van in the field. it does NOT deal with computers. what your reruiter says is shit. it doesnt mean anything. the counselor is the one who hooks you up.

Yes you can still enlist in Utah. Yes you will most likely have to go through MEPS again

All of the Army deals with computers these days, even 11Bs.

You might check out the Army Reserve too, I have a couple of 74B1O positions here at the 6025th GSU. Reserve duty may not be your thing but it is a possiblility and there are many options from there (eg, after AIT get a conditional release to go active duty)

Look into 33W too. Among their other dutes they repair computer equipment. May not be exactly what you're looking for but another option.

thanks guys for all the great advice! I really do apprceiate it. I just wish everything would work out for me, but I guess I'll wait until Utah to enlist again.

I have another question, do you think I should tell the Utah recruiter/MEPS personnel that I signed a contract at the Houston MEPS and cancelled it? Of course I'll give them legit reasons, but I am not sure what to do.

Absolutely tell them. And let them know you aren't playing this time.

Hey man tell the guys at MEPS and your new recruiter straight up, I won't enlist unless I get 74B. If you are willing to wait jobs for that MOS will open up. If you aren't willing to wait try 31U, my buddy really loves working with computers and that's what he does. He seems to get off a lot too cause his job mainly does a lot of work when out in the field and when you get stationed in a combat support unit you won't go out too much, depending on ur unit. He's got a good thing going.
Seriously though, if you want an MOS fight for it, and you'll get it.

31 series does not deal with computers. I'm a 74 and I'm telling you there are plenty of vacancies for 74 (soon to be called 25B). Just look at the cutoffs for promotion....you just need to be breathing to get promoted!

You're being sold a lemon.

UPDATE

ok i called my recruiter to tell him I wanted to cancel my contract. I guess he spoke with the Captain and he told me to sign a MOS request change form. So I went over there to sign it and i made sure this was to re-negotiate the entire contract. HE said yeah they would have to because my BCT and AIT dates would be changed. So I have to wait a few days to find out if I have approval to re-negotiate my contract.

I guess I'll be heading off to MEPS again. Anything else I should look out for? I don't want to get screwed again.

Thanks guys.. Big Grin

If you want to be a 74B (25B) then you tell them that. When they start "selling" other crap to you....walk!

33W(U2)!!! If you want to deal with computers alot we do, but we also deal with electronics. In AIT, we get 1 week of Win NT, and 16 (yes 16) weeks for UNIX, from total breakdown to Major Network Protocol Setup. I have friends from school/huachuca that are sys admins, and some that do bench electronic work. And talk about your training....48 weeks of one of the best (the best from what i have heard) electronics/computer schools in the army. Oh yeah, you get to work on all of MI's equipment, as well as learn their jobs too (gotta know how to operate equipment in order to fix it). If you want to know more you can PM me, I'll answer any questions you want to know about the CMF 33.
