ok,that link said that laser surgery was not yet accepted at HALO, diving, aviation, and Special Forces. Does that mean just Green Berets, or does that include Rangers?

Do they do this for active duty only or for family members as well?

only one type of surgery disqualifies you, that's the Lasik, you can still get the PRK or PK and be eligible. Also, they will only do the Lasik if you cannot benefit from the other two, since that is the more expensive of the three operations.

and I have heard that they do do the operation for family members, but I would chack with the hospital first, the waiting list may be different.

If I read the above post (and the linked form) correctly Airborne and Ranger school is OK with LASIK? Any other thoughts? Thanks for the info guys... leave March 3rd for Fort (Relaxin) Jackson for basic. One other quick question: do I have to have 6 months of time separating my LASIK procedure before I enter basic? Recruiter is unclear on this and has not given me an answer... thanks again.

I had LASIK done 3 years ago, and it was the best money I ever spent. I had civilian doctors to it in Atlanta, it only cost me about $2,000 and my vision is better than perfect. It doesn't disqualify you from doing high speed stuff either. I am going to WOC school to be a helicoptor pilot (153A) and it is going to have no bearing on that. My friends at Bragg had it done also and they all airborne and air assault, so I don't think that you should have a problem. I think the only thing it might disqualify you for is stuff like HALO. Other than that you should be good. Your best bet however, would be to ask the flight surgeons or someone similar at your unit. They can tell you what you can get away with when it comes to that kind of stuff.

so when they say "better than perfect" that means your distance vision is better than 20/20 but that has no effect on near vision ie: when you read stuff close up you don't end up like people who are farsighted?

also, how do they keep your eye from blinking or your eyeball from moving during the surgery?

if you've ever had your wisdom teeth pulled, then you know how they keep you from blinking

also, they have special drops that affect the main nerve in the eye, and keeps the eyeball from involuntarily moving.
