No you will be issued glasses. You will have to have a copy of your perscription in your medical file when you ship.

and as a matter of fact its against regulation to wear contacts when in the field. and during basic you cant wear them due to the gas chamber and rifle range (some people have reactions to gunpowder and the contact fuses to the eyeball).

Thank God I never had to wear the Army issued glasses, but don't feel dumb when you put them on. During Basic your appearance is the least of your concerns. Instead, focus on becoming the best Soldier you can possibly be. Before you even leave, learn rank structure, the chain of command all the way up to the CIC (President), and other things like The Soldier's Creed, The Army Song, and other misc. knowledge that will make life a little easier on yourself in the first weeks. Besides, you'll never know when you might need to sing the Army song or recite the Soldier's Creed to bail your PLT out of some deep sh*t.

Unless this has changed, they will give you an exam in BCT. At least they did for me. Also, if you have civilian glasses, go ahead and bring them ... you [u:a02a58907a]might[/u:a02a58907a] be able to wear them in AIT.

Once you get to your first duty station, you can go back to your contacts ... as long as you follow this guideline:

[quote:a02a58907a]Tinted or colored contact lenses are not authorized for wear with the uniform. The only exception is for opaque lenses that are prescribed medically for eye injuries. Additionally, clear lenses that have designs on them that change the contour of the iris are not authorized for wear with the uniform[/quote:a02a58907a]

what kind of lenses do the basic training glasses come with? I have a pretty strong prescription, so I get extra thin lenses. I'm gonna end up with "coke bottles" huh...:P

yup.

the lenses are plastic, and my right lens was literally 1/4 thick.

isn't this an oxymoron?

All above is true. When you get to reception you will have to sign a statement of understanding about not wearing contact lenses. Not to worry the Basic Combat Glasses(BCG's) are dead sexy! Also known as Birth Control Glasses, doesn't take much imagination to figuire out why.

oh gawd, I just had to say this...I think I have figure out one of the reasons why the BCGs have such huge lenses. It's because when you're shooting your rifle it's freakin' hard to sight it if the lenses in your glasses are smaller. If you guy's DEP functions are anything like mines, there's this video game w/ the M16 and you have to shoot from the prone unsupported position and I couldn't freakin' see cuz my lenses were small. argh. so yeah...
