How easy is it to join AGR? Do you have to be in the reserves first?

Eligibility Requirements for the AGR Program

The Active Guard Reserve (AGR) Program is open to soldiers serving in the Army Reserve National Guard (ANG), or the Active Army (RA). These soldiers must be discharged from their component prior to being eligible for entrance into the Army Reserve AGR Program.
Soldiers must be in grades:

* Specialist through Sergeant First Class
* Warrant Officer One through Chief Warrant Officer Four
* Second Lieutenant through Major

Enlisted soldiers applying for the AGR Program, according to AR 135-18, must meet these requirements:

* At least age 18 and less than 55
* Less than 13 years of Active Service (may request a waiver from Office of the Chief Army Reserve (OCAR) )
* Eligible for reenlistment or extension (AR 140-111, chapter 2)
* Not relieved, for cause, from any duty assignment in the 36 months prior to the date of the application
* Not involuntarily removed from Active Duty (RA, AGR, FTNGD)
* Meets the medical fitness standards for retention prior to entry (AR 40-501, chapter 3 and AR 140-30)
* Medically certified as drug free, HIV negative and not pregnant
* Pass a Defense Central Investigative Index (DCII)

Officers and warrant officers applying for the AGR Program, according to AR 135-18, must meet these requirements:

* Completed a basic officer course if less than five years in grade (Lieutenant or Captain)
* Completed an officer advanced course if more than five years in grade (Captain or Major) (Waiver may be requested from Office of the Chief Army Reserve (OCAR))
* Less than 13 years of Active Service (may request a waiver from Office of the Chief Army Reserve (OCAR)
* Not received a referred officer evaluation report in the 12-month period prior to the date of application or entry
* Meets the medical fitness standards for retention prior to entry (AR 40-501, chapter 3 and AR 140-30)
* Medically certified as drug free, HIV negative and not pregnant
* Pass a Defense Central Investigative Index (DCII)

I had mine pulled up for about 45 mins before I had a chance to post. Damn multi-tasking!!!

An option I've been considereing for over a year now. I know that you can have completed no more than 15 years of AFS before needing a waiver to be considered for initial selection into the AGR program. The 13 year rule basically changed to 15 years. The HRC website covering AGR has been outdated for over 2 years now. Table 2-1 of AR 135-18 should clear it up.
