Hello to all my drill sergeants out there. My question is how can one prepare themselves for drill duty, i really want to be a drill sergeant sometime during my career, not just to say that i was one, but for the honor of it. i heard that there is a little book that you can get, that can help u prior to attending school. i would really appreciate it. i'm only a specialist with a little of 2 years of service, but it's never too early to stay on top of your game!!

make sure that you know the drill sergeant creed, the position of attention, rest positions at the halt, and the handsalute modules before you go.

Taken from a previous thread. Credit to "Drill Sergeant K"

I've never been a DS, but from what I understand, knowing the modules is extremely important. The Modules

Be up on PT, how to lead it...get the standardized PT guide and be really familiar with that. Also, be able to do PT yourself, the standard for graduating drill sergeant school is 70% in every event. Trust me, that is only the graduation standard...you need to be good at PT (lead by example) or you will embarrass yourself in front of 18 year olds. Most of them are out of shape but you WILL have gazelles and athletes that enlist.

Get a module book or find one online, and start memorizing modules. POA, Hand Salute and Rest Positions...as previously mentioned. If you have plenty of time, commit the others to memory as well.

Know the creeds; DS and Soldiers, also general orders etc. Pretty much, brush up on stuff you learned in basic.

LEARN SOME CADENCES...man, you wouldn't believe the NCOs in school that cant or wont call cadence and I am here to tell you, it is very important as a drill.

I'm a DS at Ft. Benning, I left my last unit being a PT stud, 5 months here on DS duty, holy crap I have slowed down on my personal standard. Try your hardest to lead from the front. Everything you do is for the soldiers, you need to try and make time for yourself somewhere in there. Memorize the creeds, DS and soldiers creed. Learn the SPT manual. CD 1, CD 2, MMDs

Someone told me they aren't modulating in DSS anymore, then I hear that they modulate the first three only...so I'm not sure. I can't hurt to be familiar with the modules regardless.

Is an NCOER required to enter the school? I looked on the website and it did not mention NCOERs. I am good but I am just curious.
