It doesnt take long, it isnt a security clearance...it's a local records check. There is supposed to be copies of criminal records checks on you with the packet. Once at the school they may do another check.
As far as the difficulty of the school, it depends on the person and their experience levels. When I went, I thought it was easy with the exception of dealing with not being treated like an NCO (or adult for that matter) but it is all part of the training. Also, the information can get boring, you will spends hours in classes going over a lot of army regs and policies.
PT was easy, actually it was a joke...I ended up running and doing upper body during my free time to augment that PT program, so my score didn't drop.
It is set-up to be like basic but if your are in a combat MOS, the experience won't be a shock to your system. If you are support and work in a more militarily lax environment it will be a more difficult adjustment.
If you are already E7...hahaha, you better do two things: A) Know your shit - speaking about D&C and basic soldiering (they dont care if you are the best at your MOS there) B) Get ready for a ride because E7s have it bad there, they are expected to know and do everything because they are E7 and they get the least amount of slack...but they dont get treated like E7s, E5s will be your equals there.

I have been waiting almost 40 days now and my background screening still hasnt come back. If it wasnt for that I would be at DSS already. I hope that it comes back early so I can request an early school date. I am slotted for April but I would like to go sonner if it is possible.

The background check is more than a local check. They look at your last 3 NCOERs. Me, I wasn't accepted because I had challenged an NCOER and had it removed from my files, but MY branch didn't notify the DS branch (who got my files before the NCOER was removed). So I had to contact DS branch and ended up in school 3 months later. So Ft. Leonard Wood no longer has a DS school? Somebody tell me it isn't so!! My PSG just left there last May and he was a SDS there. Oh, and have fun. Reception basically tells the privates ALL of their rights, so getting in someone's face won't be an option. But nobody told them of their responsibilities. It's like being in charge of 30-60 SPOILED brats. If you go to Ft. Lost on the trail, AR 350-6 is punative. To the WHOLE post. Ft. Benning and Sill, I guess you'll be OK, and Relaxin' Jackson?!?!? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! Just because it's in the news everytime they have some new hooah-hooah training doesn't mean they're hardcore. And I know that's a fact since '92! No, I didn't go there - I got thrown to the lions at Ft. Lost. Next to Jackson, for a female, that's the equivalent of going to Benning.
GOOD LUCK and stick close to your battle buddy when you get on. That's from an old (?) vet to the new guy.

Thanks for the information grlrplmstr. It seems to be very few people here with information. I didnt know that they even looked at your NCOER's but Im good though. They still do have DSS at Ft Leonard Wood. Its suppose to be a transition coming soon with everyone going to Jackson but the change hasnt come down yet. Im slotted to go to Jackson but im currently in an Engineer BN. I know how it is suppose to be so I wouldnt mind the break. I will take your advice and make sure that I use it. Again thanks.
