I've seen similar things on other boards. Under the avatar, badges or awards that identify a member's special contributions to the community. These could be displayed in place of the posting rank (just make that one smaller and perhaps have it change color to indicated number of posts)
Have the pics of the badges linked to pages that explain what they are and the requirements for earning them.
Some examples of what could be used as badges titanium spork, for those who post MRE recipes contest winner, for those who now own an Ipod writer, for contributing study material top 10 posters,
Could have some funny ones too like a human torch badge for excessive flaming, or an AIM badge for poor spelling.
I don't know if this is possible or practical. But I think it could be used to encourage participation in other areas of the site.
It would be kinda fun to have those. I don't know how hard they would be to set up, but it would be interesting to see what different badges are created and who they would apply to.
Easy to do if we had the graphics. As it stands right now, any moderator can add a custom title to any members account. A set of graphics would be a cool idea though.

Once again, I am but a lesser mod. A demi-mod if you will.
Hmm, I will play around with it when I get to my personal computer.

I should have fixed the problem with not being able to update custom titles.
Once the images are selected, I will upload them to the server and a code can be posted in the mod forum for each image. If you would like, a forum topic can be started that can describe each badge. This is probably the easiest way to keep up with adding new badges, updating, etc.

FYI. Adding a custom member title overrides the status bar under the member name. The "mod" graphic was put in the custom member title space and it forced the status bar graphic to not show.
I could turn off the status bar, but then it would go back to actual text titles for each member's level of posting. I had started the status bar thing because it seemed easier to understand than a text title...but it can be turned off with a few clicks on the mouse.
Just some ideas. Because of the sizes, something like these could be "stacked" as more are added to their name.
