The NCOER study question: Who receives a NCOER? current answer: ALL NCOs. This is an incorrect answer and has been for years on the site. The answer should be- Ranks Sgt though CSM. Corporals are counseled the same way as other NCOs using the DA Form 2166-8-1. The only difference is that they do not receive a record NCOER. The previous sentence could be used in the form of an additional question as well. Thanks for all of your hard work on the web site, its a great service to soldiers!

a. The rater uses DA Form 2166-8-1 to prepare for, conduct, and record results of performance counseling with the rated NCO. Its use is mandatory for counseling all NCOs, CPL through CSM. The purpose of the counseling and support form is to improve performance counseling by providing structure and discipline to the process.
b. (3) For corporals, who DO NOT receive a record NCOER, the counseling and support form will be maintained for one year. There is no regulatory requirement to keep the DA Form 2166-8-1 beyond this time. However, in some cases keeping it for possible future support personnel actions may be appropriate.
