Thinking about joining the Guard.

I spoke with a recruiter recently because I am thinking about joining the National Guard. I want to join to gain new experiences and mainly to help pay off college debt. My recruiter told me once I complete boot and individual soldier training I would bank about 12,000 from the bonus and paid training. Is this accurate, are the bonuses that good and are there cathes to receiving it?

Enlistment bonuses are very good right now. What MOS are you looking at?

I'm looking at 25U Signal Support Specialist. I have a degree in Audio Engineering so I was told I might get more money. I'm just hoping I won't sign up and get stuck in something else, can they do that?

You said you want to gain new experince . YOu definetly not going to gain new experience in the guard. You work i weekend out the month and two weeks out the year. SO the job you learn in AIT you wont even get real training on it in the guard from part time soldiers. now if you go activev you will do your job everyday, and get paid more money than in the guard.

I will let my National Guard 25U here in Afghanistan know that he is only working one weekend a month and two weeks a year and not gaining new experiences.

Good to know, Thanks

yes we all know that the national guard and reserves deploy just as much as active duty. BUt unless she deploys she will not use her job skill.

Not biased against the National Guard but I was in the National Guard and it is not worth it. You do not get trainined, you never do your job, I wouldnt sell the National Guard or reserve to anyone

Oatsnhoney,
So, in this single post, you prove that you are against the Guard and Reserve (based on your experience), are sexist (lack of denial) and that as a recruiter you are 'selling' a product.

Good to Know, Thanks

Klisiewicz,

When you go into an Army recruiter remember that if it is not in the contract then it will not happen. When I joined, of all the services, the Army was the only one that could guarentee a specific job. If the contract says 25U then you will get that (contingent on security clearance, passing all requirements at AIT, etc).

As an Audio Engineering major you may want to look into broadcast MOS. Active has positions but I am not sure about Guard/Reserves. Talk to a recruiter. But remember, as oatsnhoney pointed out, they are selling something. Just like a car, if you are not comfortable just politly walk out!!

If you do go Guard or Reserves, check out the units in your area. Most units are more than willing to have you in for a weekend. Some units do not train, others units train alot. This is similar to acitve duty.

Finally, if you have a BS you may get E4 on enlisting but that does not mean you wont have to do sh## details (buffing floors, ammo guard, etc) while on duty (both active and 'parttime').

Let us know how it turns out for you. Good luck

One I would not recommend the guard or national guard to anyone whos thinking about the military

Two Im not sexist and was unaware that saying she makes you a sexist. GOo through day and see how many times you may reference a group of soldiers as you guys. If you dont do that then i guess your better than most

Thirdly I am not selling anything my job is to help people inmy coummunity make the best decisions for thier life. She wasnts to gain experince and pay off student loans. I know for a fact that the Army offers a higher student loan repayment, we offer the best work experince opportunties. being in the guard or reserve you only have jobs thats availiable within the unit you are going to
