I'm stationed at Fort Irwin, California. I just recently got married on December 17th, and we turned in the paperwork for the marriage license on december 21. The county clerks office said it would take 3 weeks before i could get the actual certificate.
I have already found a house to live in, and its in Victoville, California. I know its an hour away, but the only reason that I'm wanting to live that far away is because my wife is going to school down the hill at Cal State, Fullerton, California. Its the half way point between Fort Irwin, and her school. She is going to school for her Masters in Economics.
I just recently went to my chain of command to ask about getting an AER loan because I haven't received BAH, or even the back pay yet. My commander told me no, that I couldn't get an AER loan because it's just for emergencies and that this wasn't for an emergency. I told him that I understood that. The only reason I wanted the AER loan was for the 0% interest. I also told him that with my current credit score I could get a loan from USAA, or any other bank for that matter. He told me that, thats what I should do, but as for living that far away, its to much, and that I could not live that far.
I explained to the commander that it wasn't going to be just myself living in the place i've found, but another soldier would be living there too. So Financially we would be completely fine. The other soldier, is already living in Victorville, and has been living there for the past year.
My commander said to make up a work sheet with all our finances, and that we (the other soldier) would have to have a couseling for living that far away. We did all of this on this past friday. The Commander wanted us to have it all turned into him by monday. We turned it all in and the commander still told me no, that I can't live off post. That the only reason is, is that its to far away. Currently, my commander, first sergeant, and probably about 5-8 other soldiers live down in victorville/barstow area. The other soldiers, are not in the same squad, nor have the same job as I do.
Can my commander tell me no, i can't live at a half way point so that my wife, doesn't have to drive 2 hours (this is with no traffic on the 15 in california) to go to school? what are my options/regulations/etc?
I considered going to IG about this, but didn't want to if it wouldn't stick.
