I would like to know how easy it is to get off post housing for enlisted soldiers. Some soldiers have PCS'd from Europe in my battalion and was not authorized PTDY because most units have room in the billets for NCO's.

Can anyone that is stationed there give me some guidance on this issue.

go to AHRN.com and you'll be able to look for houses off-post. Once you find a house you like you're going to have to contact the housing office on-post to make sure that it's an approved apartment/house. The site's been pretty helpful as I'm going to Riley here in a couple of weeks. Going to look at some houses today, so should be exciting....

Maybe for some, those duty stations that are like the worse ones usually turn out to be very beneficial, depending where a person wants to be in their professional growth. If a soldier truly wants to make a difference, they will go in with the mindset making things happen. But if a person goes to a new organization, always complaining and listening to others complain, then it will be the worse place to be.

Ft. Riley seemed alright. The post was a little weird because if you go in one gate, you're at a Camp and have to go through it to get to Main Post. Never seen that before. Found a house though, so that's good.

I've been at Riley for a while and I cant complain. Dont be a barracks rat and it is kinda nice. I guess it is like that everywhere though.

Agreed.

I'm not the type of person that always complains about where I'm stationed, like I absolutely loved Fort Hood, especially it's close proximity to Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas, but when it comes to Fort Riley it has to be in the list of top 5 worst posts in the Army. Fort Polk and Fort Irwin would take the top two spots.

Yeah, I am currently deployed with 4th brigade 1st ID from Fort Riley. It's not bad... I got married while I was there before we deployed and you can find some very nice off post housing. Junction City is building a lot of really nice new apartments I lived in one called the Bluffs. My wife is now pregnant and decided to move back home and they were nice enough to let us out of the lease. We just got lucky I guess cause I've heard of a lot of people getting screwed with that. But I know my unit had some NCO's who lived in the barracks but they were allowed to live off post if they so pleased and most of them did. The barracks sucked everyone just sat around and got drunk... I generally went to Manhattan with my buddies every weekend, we also made some trips to Kansas City and Wichita. But I didn't think it was to bad. And I guess that's a good thing considering I'm going to Fort Irwin when I get back and PCS so I'm about to see a lot more nothingness than I ever saw at Fort Riley. But Kansas is pretty boring though, I was on funeral detail and you should have seen all the back alley dirt roads and towns we had to visit. All nice people, just out in the middle of no where!

I'm deployed with 4th IBCT out of Riley as well. I do like the Bluffs, those are nice apartments, but unfortunately it seems like those are the ONLY nice apartments in Junction City. I'll admit that area of JC isn't that bad for the most part. It's definitely better than the main strip there located outside the main gate and down Washingston. What an eye sore.

Yea, Riley is THE worst...I was stationed there from 98-00 and I have to go back because my daughter lives in the area and it really hasn't changed that much since I left. People say its what you make of it and honestly, you can't make squat out of Riley. I've had 5 other duty stations since then and Riley is by far at the bottom. Kansas as a whole isn't bad because I'm getting ready for round 2 at Leavenworth.
