Hello all,

We are going to be PCSing to Ft. Benning, GA in late August. I was wondering about any good experiences? I have heard some good things but they are from people who haven't been in awhile. Thanks for any info!

They just opened a huge new PX.

At 279,000 square feet, the new Fort Benning facility is the third largest PX in the world and nearly double the size of the old one which was built in 1974.

We have lived in 5 states/duty locations(AK, TN, KS, CA and now GA, and this is by far the worst. It is expensive (and I thought Alaska and California were bad), the town (Columbus) is not that great, and the housing on Fort Benning is the worst I have ever seen/lived in(unless you are one of the lucky few to live in new housing). I am sorry to be negative, but it is really the worst post we have ever lived on - I actually loved the desert in California, and even grew to love the cold (40 below) in Alaska, but Fort Benning is just not a good place for a family to live. If you PCS here you will just have to make the best of it, but it is hard.

Thanks for you response! I found out that because we are coming from OCONUS we will get new housing, which is nice. We were at Hood, Carson, and now Schofield and I will tell you that this post has been the most challenging. Hawaii's local prices are INSANE - thank goodness for the commissary. I am excited about Benning's location as we are into traveling and have never been to the East Coast at all. The first thing we are doing is going to Nashville then Disney World!! Thanks for your honesty, I wish someone had prepared us for Hawaii so we at least had some insight. What housing area are you in just so I know where to steer clear of incase the new house falls through?
