I was at FT Polk for a month and I wasn't in JRTC. I had to put of a couple of layers of bug spray not only on my skin but my on my hair after I got it up into a bun. It's humid, and VERY muddy. Most of the locals own trucks and the place off post is small. There was a Walmart and a decent steak resturant next to it. Nothing else seemed to stand out.
I was there in '97 for JRTC -- my impression was lots of bugs and heat. Then it rained and the CSH turned into a muddy pit. Of course, I only saw a small part of the post so maybe there are some redeeming qualities.

Ain't that the truth! They had so many of those HUGE roaches and bugs I've never seen. My friends and I couldn't beleive the amound of bugs..you'd think they where purposely breeding them there.

Yeah, I think that everyone and their mother has been there for JRTC. The JRTC side of the post is the crappy side. I didn't have a good impression of Ft. Polk b/c I saw the "crappy" side of post.
From what I'm told, the other side of post is actually nice, but I've never been to the main contolment side.

I worked in the Kisatchie National Forest as a civilian back in 2000, and we stayed in Leesville. Not much to see or do, unfortunately. There is a good drive-thru daquiri bar on the main drag, and a few decent restaurants. Wal-Mart indeed is the biggest draw in town. I liked a little placed called Jacks All-Ya-Need on the edge of town. There was also a strange little bar that was housed in the office of an old gas station. They had some kind of weird bingo game where patrons bet money on what numbers the chickens would defecate upon. Leesville was a bit of a culture shock for me, but I guess it's what you make of it.

Well I am currently at Ft.Polk I am also in the hospital BJACH. I am the S-1 here at the hospital so if you do happend to come to Bjach you will go thru us on the 7th floor to inprocess. It is very hot, humid and alot of bugs, not much to do here but the hospital is a nice place to work. I have been here a year and have not yet went thru JRTC. Not much to do outside of post unless you are into the outdoors.. After a while I guess you can say you get use to it I did and its my first duty staion coming from los angeles. Enjoy!
I've spent over 2 years at Fort Polk as a junior enlisted soldier. It really is not so bad if you have a car. It is what you make it. There are great opportunities to go to college here. For entertainment it is best to get away to Baton Rouge, Lafayette, or of course New Orleans. If anyone has any further questions about this post I will be more than happy to answer them, email me at sonicd3athmonk3y@hotmail.com
Hi, I have been stationed at Fort Polk for almost 3 years, but not by choice keep in mind talk to your branch about the life cycle they will know what your talking about I don't like Fort Polk, but you might. But if convience is a issue for you then this might not be the place for you. A life cycle is a long time if your not happy with your duty station.
