My husband and I have been talking about putting in for a compassiate reassignment but unsure if we would qualify for this.
My 3 y/o daughter has monoplegia and is paralysed in her left leg and needs surgery to help her walk but the doctors here in Hawaii have no clue about her condition and we are very limited on our choices of where to go. I have had to travel to Cali. for tests because they are unavaiable here in Hawaii. I would really perfer to go to a doctor that has had experience with someone with her condition and noone here on the island has. I am getting alot of puzzled doctors and alot of "I dont knows". Any help would be appreciated.

The ONLY way to know for sure if you would qualify for a compassionate assignment is to apply for it.

I would say YES, you have reason to apply and be accepted.

Talk with Tricare and/or Army hospitals and find out where your daughter needs to be. Then have your (or a) doctor write a letter that says that is where your child MUST be for treatment.

ACS or EFMP can help with paperwork- and/or find a trusted NCO/Officer. It's not that hard, I filled it out by myself.

-DON'T LET the Chain of Command take forever on it. It should be approved or disapproved by the first O-5 in your chain of command then forwarded to DA..

Good luck!

Have you tried Shriners Hospital there? One of our daughters had problems that the orthopedic department at Tripler were kind of laid back about treating as they weren't really trained in pediatrics. We submitted an application to Shriners and received answers and the best care. Our daughter continues to be treated by them 10 years later as we have PCSd elsewhere. Our daughter was enrolled in EFMP before we PCSd to Hawaii as that is mandatory so the whole situation was frustrating.

My husband and I have tried to prepare ourselves as much as possible to make back-up plans and make sure that we do all that we can to make the transition easy but we have come to a road block. I will be honest thru it all we can't be guarnteed care 100% here. I have found the child neurologist is the only one in the whole state of Alaska. I was under the impression that our son had alternatives such as that the hospital on base could also faciliate care but that is not so they do not even carry his medication and I have found that neurologist states in his letter and patient information sheets that He is the only one an can not guarntee that he will be avaible for help due to his extreme schedule. He states that we need to make sure that we have a alternate care plan, in case he is not available. We are not comfortable with that we are here for five years. If something were to happen what could we do. We need him to be monitored to ensure that there is no complications with his care, but if there is no one that is knowledgeable about this I find hard to find alternate care. My husband and I have discussed this and have tried to see what would be the alternative there is none when there is only one in the whole state. We forsee risk factors everywhere and do not feel that we as parents would be doing our job if we neglected to do all we can to guarntee care. The hospital on base is not able to faciliate care or even have his medication in stock/ the hospital off base can not help eitheir. We found the next closes thing would be washington state that to me is not a back up plan. Is this grounds for compassionate reassignment and how do we go about getting the ball rolling if it is?

I think you would definately get approved. Have your husband tell his squad leader/section leader that he needs to go to the s1, they usually have a packet for you to fill out. Make sure you have a letter from the doctor, your commander, and a chaplain's letter doesn't hurt either. Good luck!
