If your kids are in school I would recommend trying to live in Columbia County. (Evans, Martinez, Grovetown.) On-post school is in Richmond county and is one of the worst of a bad county. (They have K-12 in one school !!!!)
I'll be reporting to Gordon in a week and had a couple of questions for you if you have the time. I intend on calling the 513th tomorrow to make sure they are tracking my arrival, and hopefully get a better idea of what unit I'll be assigned to... but for now:
What is the current barracks situation for permanent party?
Are housing policies different for Geo Bachelors?
Assuming my spouse can get orders to Gordon as well, how is the Family Housing there? Or do you recommend living off post?
The Army is phasing out the "geographical bachelor's" thing. They might not give you a barracks room if your family chooses to not move here.
Some of the on-post housing is really nice. Either brand new or in one neighborhood they took the old 'two-condo buildings' and combined each of them into ONE residence. (Hella space! Two driveways! Lots of bathrooms!)
If you have children of school age though I'd recommend living off-post in Columbia county. On-post is Richmond county- the schools are fairly Bad.
It's not a matter of choice. My wife re-upped for her assignment to Miami and Branch was not able to get me to the same location. The closest they were able to get me is Gordon.
I'm not opposed to living in some housing with hella space, lots of bathrooms(wife likes that one), etc., but I'd prefer not have to deal with having to go out and get all new furniture and such when one of us will be leaving in a year or less.
So, now that I've given you more information than you ever needed, what are the barracks like... in case I get one?
Well, if you're a student in my Bn you'd land in either that or 2-10man bays. Which are OLD.
The other Student battalions even have 80man bays while their barracks get totally renovated. They're temporary Iraq or Afghan- looking CRAP, next to a Temporary DFAC even!!!
if you are permanent party you will be pretty well set on barracks, nothing too bad from what I have heard....pretty sure they are the old style barracks, but have been renovated.

Made the trip down to Gordon a few weeks ago will be getting a home in Grovetown not far away from base. The funny thing is I had a little trouble finding the right gate to go thru at 1AM in the morning the first gate I came to was Gate 2 which was closed made a right went down to gate 3 dont even think they use that gate anymore. So I did a U-turn headed back the way I came and ran into Gate 1(Main Gate) and got onto post, Big difference from Drum and Campbell but I will get use to it.
Will be signing out on leave from Campbell in about three weeks heading down to get things set up.
''If you don't find it on the initial shakedown, look for it on their LES breakdown.''
I live in Grovetown, right out of gate#2. If you have kids it's the best place to live- Richmond County's schools are not as good. The only issue is the gate closing at night.
Gate3 is mostly for commercial vehicles to get inspected.
