Does any one know if you can request a compassion reassignment to be with a step child for surgery and recovery? My husband is active duty and we are station in another state away from my son. My husband is not legally the father, but we do not keep contact with their biological father. My kids decided to finish high school in there home town because they could not mentally handle the continual move. Legally I need to be with my son for the surgery to sign documantaion, but can my husband request a transfer to be also by his side? My son looks up to my husband as his father. Does anyone have an idea? My husband doesn't think we can.

You can ALWAYS Try. Talk with your Commander/leadership. If they support you and think it might be approved, doesn't hurt to do the paperwork.

EVEN IF you can't get a compassionate reassignment, You might be able to get Permissive TDY (up to 10-20 days??) to go be with your son. Ask about being a "medical attendant".
(I doubt your husband would be able to get that also, they usually only allow one parent.)
