I got selected to be a pilot and am just curious as to where I can get stationed with the different aircraft. I know Blackhawks are pretty much every where but how about Apaches, Kiowas and Chinooks. I couldnt find anything on line about this. Thanks.

Apaches are only in like 6 or 7 locations (Korea, Hunter AAF, Fort Hood, Fort Carson, Fort Campbell and Fort Bragg)

Things have been fast-changing in the Aviation community. I am a 15T - UH-60 Crewchief/Flight Instructor. I will lay down the low down on the majority of aircraft.

UH-60 - (OCONUS) Sinai, Egypt; Soto Cano, Honduras; Korea (Humphreys/K-16); Germany; Belgium; Italy; Alaska; Hawaii. (CONUS) Fort Drum; Fort Bragg; Fort Campbell; Fort Stewart (Hunter AAF - Great assignment!); Fort Belvoir; Fort Eustis (2 A/C); Fort Hood; Fort Riley; Fort Carson; Fort Irwin. The list is not complete and may omit a few places.

CH-47 - (OCONUS) Soto Cano, Honduras; Korea; Germany; Alaska; Hawaii. (CONUS) Fort Drum; Fort Bragg; Fort Hood; Fort Stewart (Hunter); Fort Campbell; Fort Eustis (I think they have 1 or 2).

OH-58 - (OCONUS) Not sure, but pretty sure Germany; Hawaii. (CONUS) Anywhere the CAV is! (Stewart (not Hunter), Hood, Bragg, Campbell, Irwin?, Drum).

AH-64 - (OCONUS) Germany. (CONUS) Fort Stewart (Hunter); Fort Hood; Fort Bragg; Fort Riley; Fort Campbell.

I hope this helps. Remember, 2AD and 1ID are relocating from Germany, so that may preclude the Germany units from being available to AH-64's and OH-58's however they will still need UH-60s.

That's some great information.

Apache's aren't in Korea? Carson (ACR)?

I've been here at Carson for 5 years now, and I've never seen an Apache here. We have tons of Blackhawks, Kiowas and Chinooks, though! Then again, I have also been deployed every other year, so maybe I missed a few.....

I'm a little tossed up as to what I want to fly. It seems that by flying blackhawks I would have more choices of station. Which I like because I like to move around. But it just looks so much fun to blow things up with an Apache. Plus I'd like to fly for 160th down the road and I think you have to be a blackhawk or chinook pilot for that.

I apologize, evidently Korea slipped my mind. They most certainly do have AH-64's there.

As for what to fly? Personal choice is all you have to go on. Once you progress through IERW, just after instruments, you should get your AQC. They may give you a couple of choices, but then again, they may give you only one. How you do in IERW through Primary and Instruments will help you in getting the aircraft of choice.

I personally would fly 60's, because that is what I have around 1,000 hours in, however, each aircraft has its highlights and nuances. What you have to think about is the outside. Helicopter pilots are not in HUGE demand. The people that get these slots keep them until they physically cannot fly any longer.

The most common outside aviation jobs are flying to offshore oil rigs in the gulf, EMS transport, corporate transport, and tour helicopters. If you would like law enforcement, it is rarely available, but you still have to do road time last I checked. DEA and ATF use them as well as Customs and Border Patrol.

My advice, have a fall-back degree. Although aviation service is rewarding, it is also limited in civilian use. One other option - when you become a senior CW2, put in for the fixed-wing transition. You can transition to C-12's (King Air's), RC-7's (Dehavaland Dash-7), UC-35's (Cessna Citations), or if you are lucky, the coveted Gulfstream fleet in which I currently am an engineer on.

As always, the choice is yours; it is your career. Make the most of it, but do it with the knowledge you need. Never assume anyone will tell you what is best or help you attain it. Aviation is not like other Army branches......

UH-60's as you said, would afford you the most duty possibilities, but OH-58's will soon be replaced by the new ARH, which from what I hear is a beasty little bird (its a super-beefed-up Kiowa).

Whatever you choose, have fun and stay Army! (thats for ArmyReenlistment).
