So its time to reenlist and I been overseas for 6 years so I'm looking to come back stateside. I'm a SGT 94E radio comsec repairer. The three bases I'm thinking about giving for CONUS station of choice are Ft. Irwin, Ft. Carson and Ft. Lewis.
Can anybody give me any information about them? I'm not worried about getting deployed since I had 6 years without one so I'm ready to go?

I just PCS'd from Carson in April. I liked the carson area. They have been rebuilding a lot of the old buildings and building new ones to accomodate the new soldiers coming from hood. The area is nice but the weather is a pain. It seems like at 1600 every afternoon during the summer it wants to rain for 15 minutes and then be sunny again. It doesn't get too hot, but there are some days where it pushes 100. The colorado springs area is one of the best communities I have seen since I have been in the army. Everything you need is right there within 10 miles of post, unlike here at campbell i have to drive over an hour to go to the airport. All I can say is that carson is a very good choice of duty station.

I know that ft irwin sucks! think about tom hanks in cast away, thats probably what it will feel like at irwin. It is a training post in the middle of the desert. Thats all I have to say about that.

Every unit is different. At the same time, the unit is what you make of it. If you have a bad attitude of course you are oging to think the unit sucks. If you are a good soldier who likes training you are going to love your unit. I was in 64th BSB at carson and for the most part the command was straight. Right before I left there was like a mass change of command throughout the 3rd brigade and I have heard that it all went downhill after that.

I have not been stationed at any of the 3. However I have been to NTC twice. (which is at ft irwin)
Training post in the middle of the dessert, nearest city is 40 miles away, and its not like that is even a BIG/NICE place. Echo ezactly what Go Ordinance said.
I believe that Ft Carson and Ft Lewis are the 2 most highly requested major bases in the army. Those are some good choices....altought that is second hand info, everyone I have met that has been to EITHER, loved each of them.

Lewis is good. Rains alot but thats about it. Close to big towns shopping stuff to do. Also lots of outdoor activities. Units there are not too bad. CG has family time policies which appl y to all. Could be worse. I know alot that went to Carson nice there also. Irwin is hot and nasty might as well just go to Iraq. I know few people there also.

Well, having read some of these posts my desire to go to Fort Lewis or Fort Carson hasn't changed. However, being trapped at Fort Irwin does not make me happy. My Unit is pretty good, and getting better, but the post itself is isolated and leads to LOTS of problems. On a positive note they are expanding the PX and the Commissary, and an even bigger bonus is that they have rebuilt the ENTIRE ROAD from the highway to the post which was extremely dangerous. The psotives pretty much end there. Korea was far better then thisd cause there was something to do offpost, if you were tired of post, within easy walking distance on many occasions. Here it is a 40 minute drive just to find the highway or the nearest real town, which is noted as one of the largest Crystal Meth distributing and production cities in America. The NEAREST town after that where you can even find a mall or more normal shopping or other events is 90 miles beyond that. I would FAR RATHER be stuck at Fort Drum, NY where the temps sometimes reach -40 below zero, then stuck in this hell hole. But these thoughts are just my personal views, and as i noted some people truly seem to like this post. If you don't mind temps that are higher then normal, but not quite "Iraq" hot, and you own a car you might actually like it here.
