I'm looking at PCS'ing there. I've been looking online, and it looks like houses are pretty cheap there (compared to here in VA). Anybody like it there? Hate it? Why? Know of any good neighborhoods? Anything else I should know?
My husband and I are at Fort Hood now. We don't like it. Lots of housing around. It will depend on if you have a family or not. There isn't really alot to do unless you drive for about 1-3 hrs. Its a very large base. We were at Belvoir before coming here 2 yrs ago. Somethings are cheaper. Housing ranges from 400 and up depending on what area you go to. There are different things offered here than at other bases. Good Luck when you get here. Check out internet for different locations for housing. Try Killeen, Harker Heights, Copperas Cove, Belton and Fort Hood. The cities are all within a half houf or less to Hood.
It was decent when I passed through. Alot of motorpools, I hear something like 75! That plus the constant rivalry between the Cav and 4th ID-. I dont know, it was JUST ok for me. Definetly not top on the list, if I had an option to choose to go somewhere. Why not save that for when you have to go(10 years+ and needs of the ARMY)? Good soldiering though, the training was good. With so many soldiers, traffic is'nt the most welcoming either.
I'd say choose something else, lol because Hood in my sour opinion, is just .

I am from Fort Hood. I’m currently deployed to Afghanistan. If you want to live close to post, I would recommend the south side of Killeen. The area is a lot nicer. Anything close to Killeen-Fort Hood Airport is nice. I would stay away from the Northeast part of Killeen. That is the older, run-down part. I know this because that’s where I lived…lol. The housing prices vary. I was paying $700/month for a 1200 sq ft 3 bedroom house with a garage. I would try to get a newer house. The one I lived in was old and not insulated very well. It gets really hot there in the summer! My electric bill got as high as $400 for one month during the summer. People with newer energy efficient houses were paying about half of that. There are a lot of property management companies who deal with rental properties. The only thing I can tell you is stay away from Hunter Rentals!!!!! They are not easy to deal with. They don’t seem to be very “military friendly.” I ended up getting part of my deposit withheld for damage that was done before I moved in. I had to write an official letter and wait about 2 months for a response. I ended up getting some of it back, but not all of it. If you want to get away from post, try Copperas Cove or Harker Heights. I don’t know much about those areas. Be advised, the traffic going to PT is RIDICULOUS unless it’s changed since March. Overall, Fort Hood is not a bad place. Dallas and San Antonio are about 2 hours away. Austin is about 1 hour away. I hope this info was helpful. Good luck.

Was stationed at Hood for 5 years (and am actually here TDY right now). I liked the area a lot. The base is pretty nice, they have been doing a ton of building lately. Killeen itself is ok, your typical military town. I lived in Harker Heights (just east of base) and liked it there a lot. Yes Killeen doesn't have a lot of stuff itself (I have yet to see many army bases that do) besides bars and strip clubs. What Hood has that almost no other base has is Austin 45 mintues away which is a great city (and where I plan on retiring). Home to university of texas, it has tons of clubs and night life, performing arts, lake travis, and a host of other things. Its about 2.5 hours from San Antonio home of the alimo, the river walk (really cool to visit). About 2.5 hours from Dallas/Fort Worth. About 3 hours from Houston. All and all I like the area, but like every military base, it is what you make of it.
i just escaped the black hole that is ft hood after being there for four years and a on post pcs which is common at hood. ft hood is a post that needs good leaders to come in and put forth the effort to make it better. most of the leadership at ft hood arnt in it for the troops but rather than for themselves. if u do decide to go there ignore the low or no standards around u and do ur best to make ur part of the army the best it can be for ur soldiers and ur family.
killeen which is the town that is leached on to ft hood is mostly trash. the most southern side of killeen is ok but i recommend living in copperas cove or harker heghts. dont buy anything really big in killeen go to austin or temple because u can be treated better there than in killeen. avoid rancier avenue(the road outside of the east gate) at all costs. there is nothing good down that road for any soldier. austin and waco are about an hour away and dallas and san antonio are about 2 hours away. houston is a 4 day weekend away.
if u decided to go good luck but be prepared for a challenge if ur the type of leader that has high standards.
Smittaay...I was there for a short period of time outside of deployment and I did not like it. I think you would be better off coming to Huachuca and sucking up the housing situation before going to Hood. Everything is out of the way, congestion is terrible, and the whole area is seedy. Sierra Vista really isn't seedy.
