When I do eventually enlist I'm definitely going to be heading to Ft. Benning for OSUT since I want to go with some kind of infantry specialty.

How is AIT broken down? Is it evenly spread out between classroom work and practical experience or is it all practical experience?

you should go talk to a recruter, or go to the armys web sight at
http://www.army.mil or http://www.goarmy.com i think its one of them but if your gonna join the army the Infantry is definatly the way to go. but dont come looking for hand outs or simpathy cause youl get none. HOOAH !
GOOD LUCK WITH THE WHOLE ARMY THING

It's not spread out "evenly" that I recall... but it's no different than basic... you'll wake up one morning and all of a sudden it's AIT.

LOL.....basic is basic....never ask or look for any handouts. Just be like the flock....don't swim against the current...or you will pay the consequences.....then the day comes when you graduate basic and the DS tells you "about face!", welcome to AIT

No...

I think you're all missing the point. Rather, the question I'm asking.

Basic is,well, Basic. However, when you Phase into AIT do you spend more time in the classroom learning Games & Theory of Infantry? Or do you spend more time on the ground learning and perfecting your tactics through practical hands-on experience? I'd imagine given the physicality of the job, you'll spend more time in the field versus garrison.

It's just a 5 week extension of basic.

Maybe more field time. You get introduced to more weapons and tactics... but it's pretty much just an extension.

Thank you, hicks.

I was afraid of that...

Did it live up to expectations when you went through it? Or were you kinda expecting more? Like Top's son was.

The school definatley wasn't as hard as I was expecting.

It was more mentally challenging than anything, but only becaues I left a fiance at home (which never worked out anyway) and I had never been away from home for more than a couple of weeks.

The training was good, but we learned a lot of stuff I have yet to use.....

Women? What are those?

Sorry I'm in a relationship. I'm not allowed to notice things like that.

Seriously though, it's better to be overly prepared than to be left wanting. So I suppose being "over trained" is a good thing. Question then is, are you happy being an airborne(?) grunt or would you like to advance onto being a Ranger?

I've been looking over that ITB on the other thread, and it looks fairly standard. The only daunting thing is that Eagle Run. I just don't like running. I only run fast because I want to get it over with. Smiler

Yeah, I'm perfectally happy where I'm at right now.

I just graduated Jumpmaster school, so I get to feel a little more important on airborne operations... lol

I've thought about going to Ranger school, but I wouldn't want to be assigned to a Ranger batallion. I don't like their mentality at all. No offense to anybody on here that may be assigned to a batallion.

I'll eventually get my Ranger tab, whether it's in the Spring, next year or the year after. I have plenty of time to go to military schools while I'm in this unit, so I definatley will.

Don't worry about the Eagle Run. It's an 8 minute pace.

I'm still debating on what to enlist as.

I'm definitely going combat speciality. The question remains as whether or not to go straight 11B, 11B w/Option 40 or 18B. All three put me in through Benning. -shrug-

While I'd like to earn my Ranger tab, I also am not keen about being assigned to the 75th. I don't like their attitude- a little too Marine?- and the geographical constraints aren't that appealing. SF is strictly a matter of whether or not I can physically hack it.

As an 11B are you given access to all the schools? HALO & HAHO come to mind.

All schools are pretty much based on available slots, and if your unit really needs those slots. To my knowledge, you can put in a packet for any school though.

I have been to several courses and schools and I have some more coming up. Trust me though, you'll get a shot at a lot of different schools while in the Army, regardless of the job.

While we're on the subject, once you're fully ensconced as Infantry are you trained in all the various fire team roles (and their respective weapons) or are you thrust into one position for however long they need you to fill it?

The logical choice would be training in all aspecsts...
