I just got interested in the military. I took the ASVAB and got a 82. (I am really bad at electronical/mechanical) But I aced all of the general knowledge.

But back on topic,

96B seems to be the area I am most interested in. Is anyone on here personally a 96B and if so, what do you see as the pluses/minuses of the job.

Thanks in advance.

I'm a 96B...let's see here...I love it!

As for positives, I would say that far above anything else, your career (civilian and miltary both) has so much potential. You get promoted very quickly as an intel analyst, and it provides a lot of qualification for similar (and very well-paying) jobs in the civilian sector.

Likewise, if you have any desire to eventually become an officer, working with the battle staff will provide tremendous experience for when you have to fill a staff role--you will not believe how many officers I've seen have issues with giving briefings, etc. simply because they haven't done it much.

In addition, if you like knowing what's going on, it's great. Keeping eyes on the battlefield and tracking the entire battle process is fun, especially if you like seeing the big picture.

Downsides? It all comes down to personality.

If there is one big drawback(and for me this really isn't one, but it's a matter of preference) it's that both RA and RC 96Bs have a very high probability of getting deployed, simply because of our small numbers. If you're like me, however, and love your job, it's not so much a downside. Unfortunately, because of a career turn, I missed the last rotation for us, but I'm hoping to get to the sandbox soon.

Another issue you might have is if you're not the type to pay attention very well, don't choose this MOS. I'm not talking attention in general; I'm saying if you have difficult focusing on even things you like to do, then this would pose a problem. Attention to detail is the keystone of intel, and it gets drilled into your head all throughout AIT.

Like I said, I love it. I would encorage anyone that even has a smidgen of interest to try this MOS...you'll find that it is very rewarding and because of where this MOS is found, you'll have plenty of guidance from superiors as well as great chances to network.

thank you for all your help.

Do you have to be 19 to be an Intel Analyst? I am about 18 and I was wondering if that would hinder my ability to become one.

I should be going to my recruitor tomorrow to find out if I am able to get the job (from my ASVAB scores). So wish me luck.

What would an Intel Analyst do while deployed? (Please excuse me for not knowing much about the occupation. Well, I've also heard that the only way to learn is by asking questions)

I should be a genius pretty soon

Ask all the questions you need...we're here to help!

On deployment, what you'll do will depend on what type of unit you're at. You could find yourself in a TOC (tactical operations center) of a battalion, brigade, or division; you could find yourself in an ACE (analysis control element); you could be in a dedicated MI unit; among others.

Basically, you're going to be taking incoming information and using what you already know about the enemy to predict threats against friendly forces. What form this takes or where you'll be working is dependent on your unit's echelon and mission.

If you were a 96b and had your wings, you should have no problem in requesting a SOSCOM unit at Ft Bragg. Which adds the little more of excitement to the job. You would probably like Group also.

ok, I was so tired when I finally got back to the Military job guy that I forgot to ask about Airborne. Man I have never signed my name so much in my life! When I finished for the day my recruitor taught me a very valuable lesson....learn how to shorten your name.

If only he had told me that earlier. haha

Hopefully I will be able to ask for it when I go back for the update before I ship out.

I'm assuming (I know) that you're active duty. So I'll tell you that when you get to basic training ask your drill sergeant about it. I don't ever remember anything being said in basic about airborne, but I do remember it in AIT. They took everybody into a briefing room and showed them a video, answered some questions and asked for volunteers for Airborne school. You can try that.

I'm leaving in July (I haven't left earlier since I'm still in High School) So when I go back to MEPS I will try to ask them about it, if I can't get any results from them, I will badger the drill sgt. or a councelor until I can get it.

I'm just wondering if they would even want to offer it to someone with my MOS, because is there really a need for an Intel Analyst with wings?
