DLI is a great place...I would suggest getting with your local college and take a studying techniques class, unless you already have. TRUST ME, I'm here right now.
Don't believe the other guy, the weather is great, it's quite mild all year round, fog sucks, but you learn to get over it.
Lots and lots of activities here, so gear up for a great time.
If you are on orders to come here, get a head start on the alphabet, it will help.
I had an awesome time... even if I wasn't Permanent Party. I was there 2 years and had my own truck so I got to go out and do things. The weather is crazy but you have to take it in stride and laugh when you are doing a run. I used to run and bike from the base under a bank of fog, only to hit the town and be in complete sunshine.
Things are a little more expensive but you get free housing to live in one of the most expensive places in the US.
PS... try to volunteer to work at the race track near Salinas, if car/motorcycle races.

Do you recommend buying a car? I've read some commentary like "NO, YOU'LL BE TOO BUSY! IT'S A WASTE OF TIME!" Other comments I've read say, "NO, YOU NEED A CAR, OR YOU'LL BE BORED OUT OF YOUR MIND!" Now I'm not talking about getting something blinged out, more like just a used fuel efficient car that won't die on me for the roughly 1-2 years that I'll be there.
Personally if you are going there as a SGT or higher a car is a very big convienance. If you are going there as an AIT student, it helps to have a car but let it be known that people will be begging for rides all the time.
I didn't buy a car but rather had mine shipped from my home to CA at my own expense. I do not know what I would have done without it... you can go places off-post to study and relax, go shopping in other cities, go for a scenic drive down the coast, etc. I loved having a car, but do NOT put yourself in any financial difficulty trying to get a car.

well, i might be a sgt by the time i go, but right now i'm a spc(p) who is reclassing to a linguist (korean). i tell my soldiers who hate it here in the unit in korea not to let one place spoil the army for you. if you hate your job, dont get out, just get a job you like. that is why i'm reclassing to this. a car will be one less expense since i already own one. and i guess i will be classified as a "career soldier" since i will not be IET nor permanent party who are stationed there. i just wanna know if housing is easy to get (since i will be married by the time i get there) and i also wanna know how the working environment is. when i was in an SF unit, was so relaxed, i could go days w/o shaving and no beret with my hands in my pockets and no one would say a word just so as long as i do my job and do it well. this unit in korea suck for some1 like me; it's like AIT all over again (probably because 90% of the soldiers are E-3 and below).

Housing for married Soldiers should still be very easy to get because you will live at an old base (I forgot the name). If you live there you will have to commute about 10 minutes to and from base everyday, but it isn't a bad place to live.

Campagnos has the best sandwiches I have ever had... I went on leave to Monterey to eat at the resturants there and made sure to stop there. Rosines is downtown and has incredible Mediterrainian style food (omlets are awesome). BubbaGumps is there and they have good seafood if you are into that. There is a good burrito/fajita place in the little mall that is good to go to (again forget the name... its been too long... need to go back!!!). Basically... there are great resturants all over the place and you have plenty of time to try all of them (if you do, don't spend all your money).
