Here's the deal. I'm about to be reassigned from Medical Hold back to active duty. I'm trying to go to K9 en-route. Does anybody have any info on the school (billeting, POVs, food, training, time off...)?

ALSO- My heart's set on going, and if it doesn't happen now, it'll happen later. So please don't tell me about how much it sucks, or how my career will be over, or any of that BS.

Thanks! Cool

Hey, career progression is always a great way to go. Here is a site for a little info on the course...

http://www.wood.army.mil/usamps/default.htm

Just go to courses, and on the right hand side click on "MWDHC" Military Working Dog Handlers Course

It should give you some of the basics and contact information.

Unfortunately, I've already been there, done that. I've been to the Lackland AFB website. I've definietly exhausted and web resources, unless someone has a secret website I don't know about.

well what I can tell you from my friends going and what I have herd is that the school is fun. You will have real realy days and but get off maybe aruond noon. because the dogs can work in the extreme heat. It is at Lackland AFB, TX. I was there for Traffic school and I had a blast. the billeting is not bad. you will share a bathroom with someone. he could be navy, AF or army. if your orders permit you can bring your POV. Food is not bad, the d-fac. is good there. I think you work M-F with training on saturdays once in a while. the school is I think 3 or 4 months. I have been wanting to go to that school, But I am going to re class anyway. hope you get it

Thanks, I'm looking forward to it. My reenlistment window opens on JUL 7, so if Branch doesn't want to give me the school, I'm gonna get it anyway. Cool I actually just found out that a long lost buddy o' mine that I thought was out of the Army actually just came back in and just finished K-9 school, so he'll be recieving a call from me shortly. Any more info would be greatly appreciated though. Thanks guys!

Just an FYI, my grandfather was a farm boy from Minnesota when he joined the Army during WWII. He went to Ft. Robinson, NE as they first started the K-9 corps in 1942.

I thought about it, but it's a little near the bottom of my list. I figured they'd only push me around to like 6 different people anyway. I'll keep it in mind though.

Let me change my tact. Most of the official info I would need on the school, I have. I'm just wondering now what to expect. Maybe some first-hand accounts. WHat are the schedules like, things like that. Also, I'm doing online college courses, and I'd like to continue thhe while I'm in school. Is that practical? Or will I be too busy with other things?

Stuff like that Big Grin Big Grin

I'm a Vet Tech, so I may not be the best source per se, but most K-9 handlers I've talked/worked with say they have enjoyed the course. But, then again those seemed to be the ones who truly enjoyed and loved their job. I can't recall the program I saw it on...maybe Military Channel, but I remember one scene that took place in the classroom setting. The instructor stood in front of the class and said to them: "It's not a question of if you'll get bit , but when?" If I have time, I'll try to do a little digging for ya, but don't hold me to it. Regardless you seem passionate about and that's all that counts. You'll make it.

I graduated from K-9 school about 9 months ago. It was a good time out there and the school is really fun. U stay on the post lodging dependin on your rank if you share a room E4 n below, E5 n up you get your own room. Really nice rooms too someone comes in every morning and cleans your room up. Depending on who pays for your school. you may have to pay for it yourself and then get reimbursted at the end where every u go after school. The school is almost 3 1/2 months. Your instructors could be a combo of navy, af, army or marine. there is 2 blocks u go through while your there. 1st block is all patrol work. basically learn about dogs, how to handle them, what they can do, and classroom and test. test are not hard. you will spend alot of time in the woods. make sure u bring chigg away they will eat u up. i think this was the most fun, but that depends on if u like be outdoors. dependin on what time of the year u are there is what time u get off. most time latest 1500. block 2 is all detection work. most of that is spent in buildings, airplanes, or warehouses. not bad stay alot cleaner during this block. usually get out around noon or 1300 just depends on how your teams are working. u do have to do pt there not really hard only hr long most days and most time will be at the gym cuz it gets pretty hot out there. theres only 12 to 15 people in your class made up of navy, af, marines, and army. about college they have internet connection in the room u have to pay for i think its like $20 to $25 a month. i took college while i was there so u can too. u get all weekends off, and most holidays, cant remember comin in on the weekends, but it could happen so just keep that in mind. hope this helps if u need any more info. just let me know ill try to help u out if not im sure i could find out for u.
