I'm 24 years old and
I came to the states 7 years ago from S. Korea with my family.
We came as visitors but my parents and my brother legally received green card 3 years ago.
When my parents applied for green card I was 17 so I was supposed to receive it too as a dependent. But my stupid lawyer sent the application to a wrong department, so by the time the "right department" reviewed our application I was over 18 years old. So I was forced to change my status to F1, which is a student visa, in order to stay in the states legally.

I just graduated from Washington State University with an accounting/finance degree and right now the only option I have seems to be leaving the country. I have my life, family, friends and everything in the US. They say if I leave the country now, I probably wouldn't even be able to visit because the INS will think that I have an intention to stay in the states since I already have stayed in the states for a long time.

Apart from the green card, I hear a lot of good things and benefits of being an army man. And I think joining the army would be very helpful for myself as I feel that I should be more mature and responsible. I like to spend time outside and to be a member of a big organization. Although, I'm not anyone, I take pride in this country and I believe the US Army does many good things around the world.

I came to the states legally, and my green card application is pending. I heard someone saying that I can still join the army if I have a receipt for green card application. But I'm not sure if this is true.

I'd really hope to join the army. Is there any way?

Have you tried talking to a recruiter yet? I have met many a soldier who has not been a US citizen until after they had been serving (even been at the oath of citizenship for several). A recruiter may be able to help with the specifics of your situation. Also what type of degree do you have (BA/masters ect)? Could make a big difference in what job/rank you come in with. Finally thank you for considering serving a country you have come to love. I've met many a natural born citizen who would never dream of serving and I respect your decision.

USCIS Form N-550/551/570 (Naturalization Certificate).
USCIS Form N-560 or N-561 (Certificate of United States Citizenship).

These are the forms of ID that will allow you to join the Army. As far as the receipt goes it has to show you paid for an I-90, but thats only issued to people with prior 551 cards.

I would contact whoever is dealing with your green card and see how long it will take.
