Does anyone know of any regulations that cover the use of bolt cutter???

Basically, my Section has bolt cutters, we exhausted all options to find the key, I sent a soldier to cut the lock, and he was told by a Senior NCO that to use bolt cutters you have to be an E-6 and above.

I didn't know this & have no qualms about complying. I just thought I'd put the reference in my tool bag if someone on here has it...

I use bolt cutters all the time and Im an E4. It could be a unit policy. But I guess back in the day people use to pop locks and steal stuff from the barricks or motorpool.

I don't think there is a regulation regarding bolt cutters. My company has the same policy. E-6 and above to come get bolt cutters from us. The policy was put in place by our 1SG.

We made ours Platoon Sergeant or higher has to sign them out. My unit is very bad with physical security and lose keys all the time so everytime a lock has to be cut, the PSG knows about it.

AR 190-11, Physical Security of Arms, Ammunition and Explosives

AR 190-13 The Army Physical Security Program

AR 190-16 Physical Security

I'd start with those. I vaguely recall issues with bolt cutters (and their control in the military). I don't recall specifically if any of the above regs specifically address it.

I would ask the good Sergeant for his/her help in a 'policy' memo and have them quote the source of their info so you can include it for the reference line.

If our crusty old CW4 PBO were in this week, I'd ask him.

Before doing it, I'd make sure the hand receipt holder and the key control officer were notified (and the Supply NCO -- you know how they are when you ask for a new lock!).
