I have a Soldier, and it’s driving me nuts. He has not passed an APFT since 2002, almost every time he takes an APFT he comes in with a Dr. note, he’s over weight by a lot, and I have already demoted him once, he has been my Soldier for about two years (give or take).

NOW, every drill I give him a diagnostic APFT and every moth he fails if he dose not come in with a Dr. note or he dose not “hurt” him self during some event if not every event. If he dose get a Dr. note he gets a profile, and recovery time, and of course fails or comes in with another Dr. note the next time.

He’s over weight, although he dose make “some” improvement sometimes; most of the time he gains back what he has lost the month before and always has an excuse.

I call him about twice a month to see how he’s doing with the PT plan and weight loss plan he gave to me.

My UA asked JAG if we could just give the guy the boot (rightfully so) and he was told that the board would not approve such a thing because the Reserves needs people.

I refuse to move him to another unit because im not passing on a problem. Although he would be good in another unit if he would/could pass an APFT.

He is in a firefighter unit so the simple fact that he is hurt all the time dose not sit well with me. If I or another Soldier get hurt in a house fire and this guy has to drag someone out chances are he cant because he’s always broke in some way, shape, or fashion and not only get another Soldiers injured or killed but him self as well.

Now if he was a good firefighter, and was able to perform his job with out worry I would not be so concerned about the matter. But he’s not. It’s not like he’s a bad Soldier, im confident he can’t perform critical firefighter duties.

As much as id just like to give up and cast him away for some reason I can’t. I’ve got more counseling’s then I know what to do with and to be honest it’s to the point that I just cut and paste every month.

I have tried a few others things with this guy. I can always demote him (one more failed APFT and he gets busted again per unit SOP), I can charge him with something im sure at this point, and I can just make his life horrible at drill and AT until he passes or quits. But none of those are something I want to do.

I’ve been active duty Marines, ive been active duty Army and I’ve always been able to turn a trud around before but this guy I just can’t, I’ve met my match. I’ve tried being nice and ive tried being hard on him.

Any help or ideas would be great.
