Being in the army is a complete lifestyle change. You can't take someone who probably doesn't want to be here in the first place, yank him out of his cozy environment, toss him into a fire fight and expect him to perform. The old school WWI and WWII drafts were when this volunteer army was just that, a volunteer army. Folks joined because they had more of a sense of duty to thier nation than we do today. It's not just the 26 and younger generation, it's America as a whole. I use myself as an example, I didn't join because I felt I owed my country or that I should take part in defending the freedoms I enjoy. I joined because I'm from New York City and you don't come to N.Y. and just knock our buildings down and not get monkey stomped; I love my country but I took 9/11 personally, I didn't really care what the rest of the country thought. Plus I needed roof over my head, and a means to feed myself, now even more so that I've aquired a wife and kid. I've said it many times, people join for all kinds of reasons, the same way people do not join for all kinds of reasons. We are no more a volunteer organization than, say, Burger King. The guy flippin burgers had a choice just like you and I, he chose the burgers, you chose the military. Now say Burger King inacted a draft and you where forced to leave the Army and flip burgers. Now whatever lifestyle you were leading has to change, your financial standards have to fit your new hourly salary, for you senior NCO's and officers, your boss is some pimple faced 19 year old who's uncle owns the joint. Now to make my B.K. draft analogy more vivid; say you decide to hell with it, I'm going AWOL, or you just refuse to flip one more patty. Fine, you get yourself a dishonorable discharge from Burger King, and now your chances of finding a decent job are about the same as an ex-convict, thanks for your service! The army is a great establishment for those who want to be here, we get some bomb ass bennies and the pay...well it could be worse. A draft would basically tell the world, we've gotten ourselves so deep in a hole, that now we just need bodies, not thinking, men and women with a sense of purpose, or pride, or who are just trying to feed a family, or all the above, no we just need bodies.
