When I went to the SGT board I received the memo with the list of topics 5 days prior.
When I went to the SSG board I received the memo with the list of topics the day before the board.
Lucky for me, they didn't change topics from the previous two months, so when I went in to the SSG board I had two months worth of studying every waking minute that I wasn't on duty.
So now I'm going to the NCOM board, as well as (probably) many competitive boards beyond that, with the goal of eventually getting recommended for, and being inducted into, the SAMC.
I don't want SAMC because it's a "stepping stone" or a "good bullet", but because it will help me gain the experience needed to better help my Soldiers.
Anyway, back to the original question, is it so hard to get a board memo early enough to actually study? Or is it 1-5 days out, army-wide?
I'd hate to think that's the best the Army can do.

I know this is an old post, but your unit suppose to usually give you the MOI within 30 days of the board. Wow! a day prior before a board is kind of jacked up.

Update: BDE NCOQ done (won), but that was for fiscal year 09...so my next competitive board isn't til the BDE NCOY board next July timeframe. So now I have plenty of time to study more.
