I'm appearing before an E-5 board on the 22nd and I have a question about correcting myself while answering questions:

Suppose I were to start giving an answer to a board question, but immediately recognized it as incorrect. Would it be proper to say, "as I was" (variation of "as you were"), or something like, "let me correct myself" or "correction?" Is "as I was" even a grammatically correct phrase?

Answers to this and other helpful board advice would be greatly appreciated.

"As I was" is never appropriate nor correct and will find you looking for the door...if you need you can inquire "1SG or SGM, permission to correct my response" and wait for acknowledgement...after all they are looking at your military bearing and professionalism regardless of the situation of right/wrong with the questions themselves...

I have recorded a ton of promotion boards for many different battalions. "As you were" is usually appropriate for correcting yourself.

"As you were" sounds stupid enough with drill commands.

If you change your mind in the middle of answering, just say, "correction, ..."

For example:

SGM: "What regulation covers the wear and appearance of the uniform?"
SM: "AR 600 dash...correction, AR 670-1, SGM."

I am by no means a board genius, but I've won:

- BTRY SOQ
- BN SOQ
- BDE SOQ
- Frowner 2nd place, Corps SOQ
- CJTF-76 NCO QTR
- CJTF-76 NCO YR

I also trained two soldiers, one made it to Post SOQ and the other won CJTF-76 SOY.

I've always used that phrase.

Thanks for asking, spc(p)ivy-

My board was postponed until the 1st. I was a little rattled and couldn't answeer a few M16 questions. I did answer everything I could clearly and precisely, and I nailed the Soldier's and NCO Creed. They recommended me and gave me 130 points.

So I have 568 points total, way more than enough to have made the last two 46Q cutoffs, but (knocks on wood) I'm still bracing myself for the next two weeks.
