Okay I have run into another question. What if you have the points for promotion to the next rank before you even get to the board. What is the wait to get the next promotion? Do you wait as long as all the people at the board that needed board points or because you already had the points before the board, are you promoted before them?

(NCO Mode) All the answers to promotion questions can be found in AR 600-8-19.
(Normal Mode) You must appear before the board to be eligible for promotion to SGT or SSG. Your packet doesn't even go up to DA until the board results are added to it.

I was in the same situation when I went to the promotion board.. Heck I'm in the same situation now. My cutoff score was 350 at the time I went to the promotion board, I went into the promotion board with over 500 points. The only thing that allowed me to get promoted was the actual promotion board. You have to be recommended by the board (Board President). It doesn't matter what your CO recommends or how many administrative points you have... it's all about the promotion board. You can attend the promotion board as many times as you need to, if you would like to get a higher score; considering how many points you need to get promoted. I see a lot of soldiers just getting by thinking that the promotion points are going to stay the same forever. That is totally not true!! One month that 350 cut-off score jumps to 798, now that bare minimum score won't even get you promoted. I recommend trying to max everything before you go to the promotion board. Just like Sysiphus said read AR 600-8-19, become very familiar with it.. also stay current on enlisted promotion issues and criteria. That will help you be a better leader too.

I just went to the December board and I have a few tips for you. In my company, a list of Soldiers eligible for promotion is assembled for the 1SG to review. The 1SG then circles YES or NO next to the Soldier's name to whether or not he recommends promotion for the Soldier that month. If you are trying to go to the board, it would be in your best interest to stay on your 1SG's good side. He will be one of the promotion board members that will be scoring you.
The way the board works, there are 5 members that usually consists of 4 1SG's in the battalion, and the battalion CSM as the president of the board. Each 1SG scores on a scale of up to 150 points, and checks YES or NO to recommend the Soldier for promotion. If a Soldier receives two YESses and two NO's The CSM breaks the tie. The average of all four scores from the four 1SG's becomes your board score, with 150 being the maximum amount of points awardable.
The board is highly subjective. At my board, they gave 150 points to one SPC because the battalion CSM knew the Soldier already as a BOSS representative. All the CSM had him do was recite the NCO Creed, and that was enough, and the SPC was excused with a perfect score.
It certainly helps to do things that make the unit and the Army as a whole look good, and make sure that your hard work is known by your leaders. As your NCO needs to keep you informed, keep your NCO informed. It will also help him/her write your PCS award or an impact award.
Good luck, and let us know how everything goes.

Boy, I wish that was my CSM when I went to the board. I'm the BOSS president and answered like every question, creed & whatever else right and still only got a 145. Luckily for me my points had dropped to 751 so I was able to be picked up. (I still think alot of things matter on who you "know")

Okay let me see if I can reword this question. I'm not worried about the board. I know I have to pass that to be reccommended. What I want to know is after the board, Will I have to wait the full two months along with the rest of the board people to get promoted, or will I get it earlier since I didn't need board points?

the points still have to be veiwed through the sma. in order for this you have to present yourself before the board. it still takes 60 days to go through the system.
