I have been in the military for 13years and have never seen a som/ or nco of the year board mandatory, but yet my command is trying to tell me it is. So before i tell them it is not does anyone know the reg on this subject. I have searched high and low and have found nothing. My s-1 is also looking for it, but the E-7 says the same thing it is not mandatory. I have been to countless boards on active duty (8yrs) and just won nco of the month, quarter, and year last year for my guard unit. Any info on this reg would be helpful.
Thanks for the reply and agree they are good practice. I have had my fair share. My thing is as an NCO my duty is to the welfare of my troops. I do not believe in forcing a soldier to do something if they have no interest in it. Promotion is on the individual soldier i can only take him/her so far.
I have a question dealing with the NCO of the Year board. I'm having difficulty locating study material specific to the board. Is there such a thing? Or does it derive from the generic NCO knowledge base?

NCO of the Year board for what? Check the MOI for the board you are interested in. If you want an example go to the HRC website and you can log in and see the MOI from the 2006 DA NCOY competition.
As far as getting promoted, it will depend on the command. More than likely yes, there were Sergeants competing for this years DA Soldier of the Year Competition that had been promoted along the way.
For the AWT test sheets I would start with looking in the AWT manual for the appropriate skill level. There are new FY07 manuals out on the APD website.
