I have had this question raised multiple times, but have never found a correct answer.

A soldier is in PT clothes and an officer approaches (can be in PT clothes also or uniform, does the soldier salute the officer? Of course the soldier is not wearing a cover since they are in PT clothes.

Please cite reference

Thank you

While I was in BCT and AIT we were instructed to salute officers while in PTs. The only exception was if you didn't know they were an officer, like the rank wasn't on their PT vest. Or if you were actually performing PT.

Yes, you salute while in PT uniform...it is a military uniform and you are required to render courtesy.

unless you don't know they are an officer. If they present themselves as on officer, then by all means salute.

It has nothing to do with whether or not they are wearing a hat.

Indoors, no salute. Performing PT, no salute. 600-25 is the reference of choice.

1-5:
quote:
b. All Army personnel in uniform are required to salute when they meet and recognize persons entitled to the salute.

and
quote:
i. Salutes are not required to be rendered or returned when the senior or subordinate, or both are—
(1) In civilian attire.
(2) Engaged in routine work if the salute would interfere.
(3) Carrying articles with both hands so occupied as to make saluting impracticable.
(4) Working as a member of a detail, or engaged in sports or social functions where saluting would present a safety
hazard.
(5) In public places such as theaters, churches, and in public conveyances.
(6) In the ranks of a formation.
Nothing about hats.

This is a ten level task

I don't see anything in your quotes that says no saluting in PT's. It does mention not saluting when performing sports if a safety hazzard would be presented, but the OP said nothing about actively performing sports. He could have been walking down the sidewalk on the way to his car in his PT's.

Thank you for the reference.
On page 27 Table C-1 it does mention PT uniform. You do not salute the flag, you place your hand over your heart, this should also mean that you do not salute and officer.

4. Military personnel and civilians in civilian
dress without headgear. Personnel engaged
in sports and attired in a sports uniform without headdress.

So why do you salute the flag when in PT Formation at 0600 (or whatever time the flags goes up)???

"should"??? is that on the regulation "this should also mean..."??????

You do not salute the flag when in PT Gear. That is spelled out in the regulation. If you do salute you are wrong. Period.

You are not required to give a salute while actively engaged in PT so if you are walking down the street in PTs and see an Officer you will Salute.

as far as reveille, you better salute unless you are taking a PT test. your formation should be based around the flag anyways, have your formation, salute then do PT.

You can also salute the flag at reveille and retreat in civilian clothes if you so choose. it used to be if you were in civilian you stood at attention and placed your hand over your heart, now you have the option to do either or

When in doubt whip it out. The only time I've ever been busted for saluting was in Al Asad. I was convoying there, had no idea it was a non salute FOB, and got chewed up by a Marine Captain. SH*# happens.

When you're actively engaged in PT does not mean just wearing PT gear MSG-Smith....it means like if you are running in formation you don't stop and salute. The only other time, as it has also been stated is when you don't know the person is an officer. I know what my company commander looks like and my section OIC so I salute them in the mornings when I see them. Our company probably has a ton of other officers I ignore each morning because I don't know who is an officer or not.

If you're just standing there or waiting for formation I hope you salute. I don't want to disrespect a senior non-com but shouldn't you know these basic things? So if you put a diamond on you are going to tell me you're not going to have your company/battery/troop salute in the mornings before PT? Confused

I will give you that the regulation is not clear on the saluting an officer in PT gear, but do we agree that you do not salute the raising of the flag in PT gear?
