In a recent board my brigade CSM told me that I should wear a Clip on tie with my Class A uniform because it looks better. Now I have always heard the complete opposite, which is never wear a clip on to a board. Any ideas?

I would suggest learning how to tie a double Windsor.

(2) Description. The material is polyester, wool, tropical, or a similar type of woven fabric; a knitted fabric necktie also is authorized. The necktie will be two-fold, four-in-hand, with pointed ends. As an option, a pre-tied, snap-on necktie is authorized for wear.
I gave up on the tie after going to a board and having 3 senior NCO's say my tie is wrong, then they tie it "correctly" just to have the next do the same thing. Enjoy

For my promotion board, the first one, I had tied the perfect knot. When the board was checking out my uniform I was asked by most of them if I was wearing a clip on and then did not believe me when I said it was tied. I got some brownine point when I proved it was just a really good knot.
I agree the clip on is the perfect knot but it looks lazy. You spend forever measuring everything out to take a shortcut on the tie? A good knot still looks better than a perfect clip on.

I've won numerous Soldier of the Quarters up to Corps level as well as NCO of the Quarters and Year up to the Task Force level with a clip on...split between combat arms and MI...I really doubt it's a big deal.
I have worn my Class As like three times in the last four years, including my DA Photo.
