I guess this is what happens when you have unit reenlistment NCO's that are not Career Counselors. Events like these are why people get out of the Army, they see a good soldier that wants to stay in but they (fellow soldiers) do not take care of their own.

A unit Reenlistment NCO is completely different than a Career Counselor ... did you ever seek out your Career Counselor?

Did you ever ask about TDY and return versus TDY enroute?

NO ONE cares more about their career them themselves! It's YOUR Career ...

That is the ironic thing, the NCO was getting advice from the post CC. I am not really complaining I got a new & better MOS, it has great civ/gov opportunities, reenlist bonus, faster promo, still get TA, I can still PCS after time on station.
Would just like to serve a tour overseas before I really have to make that final decision on getting out.

I just look at it as: If a good soldier were on the fense about staying in that situation might be used as a reason not to stay in.

I personally think that the army in general keeps too many soldier that they should not just because it needs the numbers. I would rather see the army work harder to keep good soldiers than settle and keep bad soldiers just because it needs the numbers.

How would the Army try to accomplish this?

Good issue, but need to hear your ideas to fix it.

Well I would start by looking at bringing back the specialist 5-7 ranks. Reason: I know there are jobs in the army where the points for E5/6 are almost always max this, I think, would have to be every demotivating for E-4's. They are left with few options to stay.

Also what about the soldiers that really like their jobs but know at some point they will not be doing that job because they have to become a "manager" NCO to stay in the army.

The Spec ranks would allow these soldier who are not NCO material(not all soldiers are) or who love their job to continue to do that without being forced to move to the NCO ranks, change jobs, seperate, or ETS.

Along these line I would do away with the mandatory retirement chart for enlisted. Being enlisted is not an easy life but if you have an E-6 that loves their job is good at it why make them retire at 22yrs. If they are capable to do the job and want to continue past that let them. I think the ones that just want that retirement check will leave at 20yrs and the ones that feel they are making a difference and like what they are doing would stay longer.

I would look at doing away with the indef 10yr marker at E-6. I kind of see this as a reason to not be a proactive leader. If they are just in the army for a check they need to have some level of preformance checks to continue to be employed. NCOER's I believe fall short.

Along with this I would change the promo points around for military ed and college ed. The army talks a good game about education that everybody needs to get it and use the TA program etc.. but falls short on rewarding those that do continue there education while in.
Maybe look at some type of addition bonus for reenlisting if you have aquired a BS/BA degree. Soldiers that have these degrees know they can have a better life outside the army and their only real option to stay and use their degree is to become an officer and not everyone wants to do that.

Being revamped as we speak. Unsure of an approval/disapproval date, but it is being looked at.

How about indef beginning at 14 years instead of 10 years? Maybe 16 years? Would that be better?

Also, you ideas are addressing senior Soldier/NCOs, anything for the junior and mid-levels?

I'm going to close this topic (because we're way off topic), but if you're serious about making a difference, start a new thread with a catchy subject that Soldiers can add to.
