This may be a stupid question. First off, I'm in ADA I re-upped in Sept 2007 and stayed in my MOS, 14J, in order to get the rest of my bonus. I also got duty station of choice (Kaiserslautern Germany) my next window is 2010. My ETS is 2012. I almost re-classed to 15U when I re-upped. I REALLY want to get away from ADA. My MOS isn't a critical MOS anymore. But, I believe I would reclass to 15J if I could. So, Can I? Or do I HAVE to wait until my window opens again?
First of all, 14J is a shortage MOS (Y/N) from E1 to E6, so you cannot request reclassification. You have to be in an overstrength (N/Y) MOS in order to request Voluntary Reclassification; this can be done when you are NOT in your reup window, but you must be in an overage MOS. Secondly, when your reenlistment window does open, unless you are in an overage MOS, Army Training will not be offered. This option is only offered to initial-term Soldiers and Soldiers in overstrength MOS's. Here's another thing: If you WERE able to reclassify and you have previously reenlisted for an MOS-specific bonus, you would be subject to having a portion of that bonus recouped upon award of a new MOS, unless it were in the same Career Management Field (CMF).

Ok, how do I keep track of the status of overage or shortage? I'm E-4. And I did not know that reclass was for initial soldiers. So chances are 14J will NOT be an overage MOS and I won't be able to re-class anytime soon, if ever. Right? That's a real downer.
To keep track, you can contact your servicing Career Counselor for the latest In/Out Calls or go to your unit or battalion Retention NCO and ask them for it. Each unit also has a reenlistment bulletin board that will have the In/Out Calls posted. You never know if or when your current MOS will become overstrength, just keep checking.

I checked out the IN/OUT calls. 14J has a (1) beside it. It states that "SLDRS IN MOS ARE AUTHORIZED TO REQUEST RECLAS/REENL WITHIN THE SAME CMF WITHOUT REGARD TO THE IN/OUT CALLS" ...CMF? I tried to look for the abreviation but I couldn't find it.
