I am an E-5 with 3+ years in coming up on ETS Feb 08 I am looking at the BEAR Program and have some questions that I can't ask in my current situation cause my reenlistment NCO is on a bigger base and never comes down towards our area to often.(I am Deployed) I am looking into the 18 series and I wanted to know for whatever reason that I was removed from SFAS or the SFQC and did not complete retraining would I be stuck with the reenlistment time or just the extension time added for taking the course which extended over my current enlistment?
I would also like to know if the extension time covers all the way to the SFQC or just SFAS.
Thanks for the help.

18 series is a great selection through the BEAR Program.

Here is how the processing works for 18 series:

Requirements and guidance for entry into CMF 18:

a. Successful completion of Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) course is required for attendance at all SF training courses. Soldiers serving in OCONUS long tour areas will attend in a TDY and return status. Those soldiers serving in short tour areas will be scheduled for SFAS and SF training at DEROS.

b. Soldiers completing SFAS training will be awarded a PMOS by the GATE II selection board. Soldiers applying for CMF 18 will be made aware that the selection board can change the requesting soldier's MOS. Soldiers will be counseled that upon arrival for SF training, they must identify themselves as BEAR recipients to prevent the school from changing their designated MOS training on the extension agreement. If the school changes MOS training dates, the soldier must contact the installation retention office in order to coordinate a renegotiation of the executed BEAR extension through the Retention Management Branch.

Sorry about that. Wink

Bottom line is, when one receives the benefits of an extension, that extension must be honored.

Once one graduates and is awarded the new MOS, then within 90-days you'll reenlist. If you are not awarded the new MOS, you will not reenlist for the bonus.

That's along the lines of what I was going to say. It should be noted that you will be locked into your bonus amount at the time of extension. So if you extend when the bonus is at 2A, and it becomes 1A you will get 2A.

So even either way fail or pass you must reenlist for the time on the contract? (Not talking about extension time I get that concept.)

No you don't have to reenlist. That is why you have to extend to have 2 years left after completion of the course, which is done before attending. So if you fail then you will still have 2 years of the extension to complete. If you pass you don't have to reenlist but you won't get the bonus. If you want the bonus for those 2 years then you must reenlist within 90 days. If you reenlist after the 90 days you can receive a bonus but you will not be payed for the 2 years, only for time after the 2 years.

I have a similar problem to this guy. I have completed SFAS and have orders to the Q course, and will need to extend at my two year window here in a mounth. The question is if my ETS date is in Aug 09 and I half to extend for two years under the bear program to meet the requirements, and good for bid something was to happen during my training. Would I be stuck in the army until Aug 2011. Thanks.

Short answer is yes; 2011 will be your new ETS. The Army sends you to training and expects something (time) in return.

There are ways you can get out of it, but it's unlikely unless you're injured and cannot return to the course.

There are many what-ifs in this scenario, so it's hard to answer unless a more specific scenario is place here.

What happens if you get recycled during your Q course? Do you still get the bonus once you graduate?
