I am getting ready to become a Drill Sergeant and am thinking of doing the 97E next DEC when my window opens. Is this possible, and if not how long do I have to serve on DS status prior to reclassing.

You'll serve two or three years as on Drill Sergeant befor eyou can submit a BEAR Program. If the class dates are loaded in RETAIN, you may be able to submit the packet next December and leave when your two years are up.
