I went today and talked to my career counsler. Sad thing is, he told me he is new at this and doesn't have all the answers, but will try and find them. Felt let down!
I have 18 months TIS, am a E4 with 12 months TIG. I am a 21K. I am currently stationed in Fort Stewart. ~~I am wondering if there is anyway to get my duty station at Fort Irwin, California. If my MOS is 'overstrengthed' can I look and see what there is available for fort irwin, then reclass assuming its on the army shortage list? My retention NCO also mentioned for me to call the branch and see what they can do?
Not sure if anyone can help me out, but any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am new to the army, so don't quite know all the ins and outs of how things work. THANKS
My ETS is OCT 2011. The main reason I need a change of duty station is my wife has medical problems, and while I was deployed she was in and out of the hospital, and trying to take care of 2 kids. The closest family is over 2000 miles away. So you can imagine its taking its toll on her. Not sure if you can get a different station with a Colonels recomend or not?
Since you are not within your 24-month reenlistment window, you'll have to submit a DA Form 4187 through your chain of command to request an assignment.
If you're looking to reclassify, you'll need to submit a voluntary reclassification through your Career Counselor; the follow-on assigment will not be guaranteed and you can go anywhere that requires you.
