What's the catch? Get the training and you could be doing the same job with the CIA making more money. The Army is competing with other government agencies for you. Oh yeah, you'll get to learn a great new langage (probably Arabic or Chinese) at the government's expense!
Here's the duties of 97E:
a. Major duties. The human intelligence collector (supervises and conducts HUMINT collection operations that include, but are not limited to, debriefings, interrogations and elicitations in English and foreign languages for positive intelligence and force protection information; screens HUMINT sources and documents to establish priorities for exploitation; under Counterintelligence (CI) supervision, plans and participates in CI source and Force Protection Operations (CFSO). Translates and exploits captured enemy documents, foreign language and open source publications. Prepares and edits appropriate intelligence and administrative reports; utilizes CI/HUMINT reporting and communications equipment; uses interpreters and manages interpreter/translator operations; conducts liaison and coordination in English and foreign languages with host nation agencies; conducts analysis and performs briefings as required. Duties for the MOS 97E at each level of skill are:
(1) MOSC 97E1L. Under supervision, conducts debriefings and interrogations of HUMINT sources in English and foreign languages; assists in screening HUMINT sources and documents; participates in CFSO; translates written foreign material and captured enemy documents into English. Performs analysis as required and prepares appropriate intelligence reports; acts as an interpreter/translator for intelligence matters and materials; assists in intelligence support to Threat Vulnerability Assessments.
(2) MOSC 97E2L. Performs duties shown in preceding skill level and provides guidance to subordinate Soldiers. Plans and conducts interrogations, elicitations and debriefings of HUMINT sources in English and foreign languages. Assists in the screening HUMINT sources and documents; participates in CFSO. Reviews and edits translations of foreign documents; performs translation and exploitation of captured enemy documents, foreign and open source documents; prepares and reviews appropriate intelligence and operational reports; uses interpreters; acts as an interpreter/translator for more complex intelligence matters and materials; conducts briefings.
