This confuses me as I put in a reservation for my MOS at the recruiters office yesterday and go to MEPS next. I'd like to change my MOS though, as I don't think it is the best choice for me.
Since you are an IET (Initial Entry Trainee) soldier, you will not be authorized to live off post until you reach your permanent duty station. If yall really want to be close, he could use the BAH to move to a place near Goodfellow. But you will still have to live in the barracks.
Congrats on Signals Analyst.... there are a million opportunities with that MOS.

I just graduated from Goodfellow AFB 21Nov2007 as a 35N SIGINT ANALYST same as you. In my very recent experience ANY first time AIT soldier/soldiers'familys were allowed to live off base with BAH. I was in second platoon. There is only one 35N Company of AIT, except the prior service guys. Well, in my platoon (2nd) we were allowed to live off base if we were married, but only after taking a diagnostic 1-1-1 assesment pt test and passing a regular army standard pt test (60pts in all events). The other platoons had similar but different requirements. First platoon had to live on-base until they became phase 5. You start at phase 4 and it takes passing the reg standard army pt test and I'm not sure but I think it's about two months time on the installation to become phase 5. In any case you should be able to get off base. This is the phone number to the staff-duty office where there is always a sergeant or drill sgt. on-duty to watch the "barracks" area. (325)654-5295. Don't be afraid to talk to a drill sergeant. Just refer to the person by the rank they say they are when they answer the phone. Explain you're questions and they'll gladly answer you. It's very laid back. The barracks are awesome.. Like a motel6 with a bathroom shared with up to three other people. Males/Females are separated of course. At the DFAC (dining facility/chow hall) you don't even have to bus your tray. There are booths a salad/potatoe bar, snack line, and normal meal line. If you live off base you will have the option to get BAS (get paid to eat instead of a meal card for the DFAC) which I think is $280/month. That's what my BAS is at FT.Gordon is. You wont know where your permanent duty station will be until you have been in AIT for at least five months at which point you can get in on your ASK in AKO. Well if you have questions just ask, email,or call that #. IF you remember, tell D.S.Felan one of his soldiers said he's an awesome Drill Sgt. HooAh
Oh yeah, BTW if you're a female n/m this post but anyone who becomes an 35N. When you see a recruiter for intel people to join rangers or SF group, take it. you'll get an automatic slot at jump school. if you dont want to go to iraq dont go to jump school. its that easy. it really is.

As intell, just because you don't have jump wings isn't a guarantee you won't go to Iraq. The opposite is also not true. I have friends that went to jump school and then SF right after 35P AIT and none of them have been to Iraq yet. While I also have friends that have not been to jump school that have done numerous tours to Iraq and Afghanistan. The bottom line is we’re an Army at war and if you need to go you’ll go. The majority of intell guys I know that have gone and come back don’t have jump wings.

The comment from PVT.Stone is correct. Screaming96B, I'm sorry, but you're wrong. My husband is currently training as a 35N at Goodfellow AFB, and he also went to BCT at Ft.Jackson. I was told by his recruiters that I could not move to TX with him to AIT and that the Army would not pay for it. They were wrong. As soon as you get your orders from BCT and are able to get to the nearest Military Installment, go up there and schedule a move. They don't need an address if you're getting an apartment, or don't have one yet. All they need to know if that you'll be at Goodfellow AFB. They store your belongings there until you give them an address. You can attempt to live onbase, but you won't get BAH. It is nicer to live off base b/c you get the extra money not put towards rent. If people say you have to be able to sign a years lease, sign a years lease. When you get your orders to leave/move, they have to respect what's called "The Military Clause". When you get orders, they can't do anything to you for breaking the lease. Same goes with onbase housing. It doesn't matter if you're only here for the 6-7 months for training. Once you go to schedule a move, if you'd like your husband to go with you, the army with take care of the paperwork and they will pay for the movers and moving company. You have to put out the money at first to fly or drive over here, but they will reimburse you later if you give them the information such as travel confirmation numbers from airlines. My husband and I got reimbursed about a month 1/2 after we moved here. PVT.Stone is correct in saying that you have to live on base until you pass a PT test. Here at Goodfellow they have 3 phases. You start off at Phase 4: minimum privilages and you have to live on base. When you pass that PT test, you go into Phase 5 or 5+: More privilages and you're able to live off base if you have an apartment. While living on base you will have barracks maintenance and they will be checked. When living off base the Sgt's can and will come to your home and check your house to make sure it's in decent living conditions. You will know when they're coming, so don't worry. If you don't want the military to pay right away for you to move and you want to go through a moving company of your preference (a DITY move) you will still get reimbursed for it later as long as you provide the paperwork. It's a hell of a lot more stressful though doing a DITY move. Here in San Angelo, there is hardly anything to do but go to bars. You're in the middle of Texas with a population that just hit the 10,000 mark. Prepare your husband for boredom. If he does want to work while he's here, a company SITEL is really big and pays well here. Otherwise, he'll be getting some high school job that pays the very minimum wage of $5.85 currently.
If you have anymore questions, my husband and I would be more than happy to answer them! My email is thesuttons53787@yahoo.com.
Good luck!
