I'm currently a National Guardsman/college student under the split-option enlistment program. I just got out of BCT in late July, am in the RSP program now, and will go off to AIT in the summer.
At the moment I am a 35-fox (intelligence analyst,) an MOS that I honestly wanted when I enlisted, but there is a problem: the AIT is 4 and a half months long, which would result in missing a semester of college, so what I would like to do is change my MOS to something that has a shorter AIT. Is this possible?
But before I get admonished by a slew of "you should have known" comments, I was well informed by my recruiter of the length of the AIT and the possibility of missing a semester. What I didn't know was that the way my major (bio/pre-med) works at my university, many of the core classes I would have to take during the fall semester (the one I would be missing) are not available in the spring, and more importantly are prerequisites for other classes, thus putting me almost a year behind instead of a semester. After calling the advising office about this issue, I was told that this would almost certainly throw me on the five year plan and have a negative impact when applying to medical school. I only learned this months after enlistment.
I'm actually quite disappointed to have to take this step; I really do love the army and am proud to have joined. I really did want to go to intel school. Nonetheless, my question remains: can I change my MOS before AIT (I have about 10 months left)? what's the process? how much red-tape should I expect?
I really don't care about losing my bonus, the GI bill or any of that extra stuff. I was never in it for the money anyway.
As far as i know you can not change your mos pior to Ait but i could be wrong. I know that if you lose you clearance(i wouldnt sugest it) you can change you MOS during school or if you cant medically perform the duties (my sister was a medical reclass as a result of airborn school). I think you might be able to change you class date for school. If you leave right after you spring final will you still have enough time make it back befor your fall term starts? I hope this helps you.
