Ok. I know this question has been asked a few times, but I would like to be a little more specific in my probe. I am an E-4 (Specialist, non-promotable). My current MOS is 25D (Telecommunications Operator/Maintainer) which currently is offering a bonus under the SRB program. However, I am currently interning for CID. I am in the process of putting together my packet for acceptance to ASAC (Apprentice Special Agent Course), but currently it has not been submitted/accepted. I am wondering if I reenlist as a 25D prior to turning in my packet will I have to repay any bonus I get after I turn my packet in and go to ASAC? Also, since CID is an application based MOS and is not guaranteed through any reenlistment would I be able to keep any bonus I got for reenlisting as a 25D even after my packet is approved anyway? Currently 25D and 31D are not on the BEAR Program list so I'm just trying to see what my options are. If I'm going to reenlist for 5 years, as CID requires, I would like to get something for it if possible. I'd be curious to know what the reg says if anyone can find anything specific about this.

Kind of have the same questions as above. Recieved an enlistment bonus as a 63B and when going to Iraq this year was going to try to re-class to EOD or 21P ( prime power) what are the chances of paying my bonus back? Can get a real answer out of anyone in my area about it.

Any and all questions about bonus retention/recoupment can be found in AR 601-280. This is what I was able to find on the subject, though.

5–15. Recoupment from soldiers who voluntarily reclassify
Except as provided in paragraph 5-14b(7), a soldier who voluntarily reclassifies and fails to complete the obligated service for which the SRB or EB was paid will refund an amount equal to the unqualified portion of the agreement.
a. Soldiers who are bonus recipients may voluntarily reclassify provided—
  • (1) They volunteer in writing and agree to the recoupment of the unearned portion of the bonus.
  • (2) The MOS requested is a more critical skill than the PMOS currently held as determined by HRC-Alexandria.

b. The effective date of recoupment will be based on the date of reclassification.
c. Approval authority of all reclassification involving bonus recipients is Commander, HRC-Alexandria, Attn: AHRC-EPR-F.

Hope this is able to help a little.

Yes, if you receive a bonus and voluntarily reclass, then the unearned portion of your bonus will be recouped.

This does not apply for Soldiers that enter into a commissioning program.
