Is it possible to request a bonus payment to be expedited? My new contract was active on 01MAY12.

I need a newer vehicle. I am dumping money into the one I have and am relying on my bonus as a down payment. I have no clue what my options are and my unit has not been any help. Any help is appreciated.

I'd bet you could buy an engine and transmission for the old vehicle for the same as a 'down payment'. And no payments. Just saying. You don't "need" a newer vehicle, you Want one.

so you're saying buy a new engine and tranny for $4000 approx, on a vehicle worth 1200, which will still be worth 1200 after the new engine and tranny...doesnt sound worth it to me.

$4k? Only if you use the dealership. A smaller private garage could do it for half that.

Or do the work yourself, just pay for parts..
All big Army posts have the "Auto Craft Shop" or "Auto Skills Shop".

Anyway did you get the bonus figured out yet?

Ptrost - you can check with your local finance office to see if it is posted in the pay system, but usually the window is about 30 days from the date you signed for it to be fully processed. Once HRC processes the reinlistment bonus paperwork from your career counselor, it is sent to DFAS and the payment would be listed in the pay system. Some civilians at the pay office might just tell you to wait a couple months for it to post, but it would take them less than 5 minutes just to look you up in the system and check if it is in there.

The Finance office or "DMPO" on your installation/nearest installation. Although once again, some civilians will be difficult if you are not assigned to that installation, but any finance office can check any Army active, guard, or reserve soldier through the pay system by social.

After fighting a month with my career councilor about this bonus.. he tells me that because I had a 3 year contract initially, that my 3 years of service didnt start until graduation day of AIT. So the contract I actually signed with the promise of the bonus was 14 days early of my one tear window, and now my MOS is not elligible for a reenlistment bonus at this time.

The key for all soldiers is to read your contract. If no bonus is actually in the contract, then you are not getting one. I have had a soldier come in who asked about a bonus because another soldier the same MOS, rank, and AIT class got one. One had it in their contract and the other did not, even though the situation was virtually identical.... gotta read those documents before you sign them.

Ptrost, are you RA or USAR?

lfoosutnd, you are USAR, and I've been arguing with my command about this issue for a while. Allow me to introduce you to the big green weenie:

The 3x5 contracts executed in 2009 didn't contain any of the language indicating an effective date. While the policy is for the 3 years to begin after you complete IET, no mention of this is made on your contract or any references made therein (not that I have found anyway).

They are basing this off of a 2005 implementation guidance memo from HRC to TPU commands which is also not mentioned in your contract. In 2005, the reserve annex of your contract would have actually specified this policy.

My reasoning that such a memo not referenced in the contract could not affect a service obligation has been repeatedly dismissed outright.

Your option for getting paid on this contract involves non-traditional channels and your odds are probably slim at best. You might try JAG or your congress critter, but I doubt they will be willing to take it past an initial inquiry (such inquiries I imagine would go to my command, who would produce the memo thereby satisfying the inquirer; at least that's how my last congressional went).

Alternatively, you can request through command channels that your reenlistment be voided since it was executed outside of your window. I believe G-1 should be the approving authority. Your career counselor will be able to assist you on this.

Regrettably, this will not result in bonus payment unless you reenlist again. Chances are with the changes on 1 June, your bonus amount went down (in some cases a $6k difference)

None of these solutions will result in timely payment. I think you're looking at about a year (3 years from graduation of AIT) before you see any of it.

I'm making a few qualified assumptions here; I would need to see your initial contract to be certain.

To the initial question: no such thing as a bonus advance.

Bonuses are now unit based rather than MOS based.
