I am a 94D(SSG) and there is a re enlistment bonus for my MOS. I have a little over six years. I was told that I do not qualify for the bonus because I have less than a year on my original contractual ETS dat which was August 2006 but was moved to 2007 due to Stop Loss. Is this true? I thought that the Army didn't care when you re enlist, as long as you do it before you ETS and being that my MOS is trying to retain Senior NCOs, I would have thought that I would get this bonus for re enlisting.

He is a Reenlistment NCO. This is what happened: Last year I was called to do Recruiting by DA and I didn't have 3 years left on my contract so in October of last year, I had to reenlist for 3 yrs to meet the requirements for recruiting. While I was at recruiting school, DA realized that I wasn't a citizen and sent me back to Fort Drum with the 3 yr obligation still intacted. But since I was only reenlisting to meet the requirements for recruiting, they said that they would renegotiate my contract. I told them that I wanted to wait until I get my E6 which I did in July. They told me that basically they would chapter me out for a day and then reenlist me. Now that I am ready to renegotiate my contract and I am an E6 now, they are telling me that since I have less than a year on my original contract, I would not be able to get the bonus and I think what he is really trying to say is that since I waited until I became an E6 to renegotiate my contract they will not give me the bonus that comes along with me re enlisting as an E6. They knew this from the begining that I was planning on reenlisting and renegotiating my contract once I received my E6, so I don't understand why they are now telling me I can't get the bonus that I am entitled to for reenlisting as an E6. They could have told me this months ago. Can they do this?

Bottom line is, you cannot pick and choose when you get to reno a contract. When and if this happens, everything that you do will be like it was back when you reenlisted.
Your Career Counselor should not have let this go on for this long and let you think you could do this.
Instead or renogotiating, could you just reenlist now and get the bonus?
