I believe its Local Policy battle. I always wore my campaign hat indoors ay Knox and there was never a problem, bar the occasional non-DSQ CSM who didn’t understand the idea behind wearing the hat indoors; i.e. quick leader ID among hundreds of brand new Soldiers who are still trying to come to terms with the idea of having a strong leader in their lives.

But if they are hating on the hat just take it off indoors, it may make things a little more difficult but if you are a DS I’m sure you are a creative enough leader to overcome this obstacle. You and I both know wearing that painful hat indoors is the least of your worries. Be glad you’re not at other posts whose names I shall leave unmentioned where they are required to wear field jackets when there is cold weather or patrol caps when they are doing FTX’s.

I always used to laugh when I saw a BD driving his POV with his campaign hat on.

I read somewhere they wear their hats indoors because they're also wearing pistol belts, which means they're "under arms."

I read a lot of military history, so I don't remember the exact source, but from what I remember, "under arms" didn't mean you had to be armed. In the past, wearing of the belt indicated your status in a duty position. It could be that the hat remained on, for tradition, even though the sidearms were no longer worn. And now it's still worn even though belts are no longer worn.

Just a theory in the absence of a definitive anwser.

Man how BCT has changed. I never noticed if my DS was wearing a hat or not. All I knew was that a$$es were chewed both indoors and out.
