Currently afaik no units are set to deploy from South Korea. Most of the current units there are flagged as "forward stationed" which gives them the consideration of being deployed already. I believe there are plans of making USFK deployable in the future kind of like how Germany is, but this is years in the future. I do however know of a few times when a company here or there is plucked from Korea for deployment. There was recently an aviation batallion that was moved to Ft. Carson to get ready for deployment to Afghanistan. Also back in 2004 an entire brigade was deployed from Korea, but I think you can bet on no deployment from Korea for the next 2 years. Sorry for the long explanation.
SGT Smitty: Thanks for your answer. You were stationed in Korea? This is my first time and I don't know what to expect; like if I can bring my family. Thanks Again
Yes I'm stationed here currently actually. Bringing your family is actually encouraged now. But I would say it depends on which camp you are going to be stationed, do you know that information yet?
Thanks Again. Well I am Prior Service 92Y20. I report to MEPS on Dec 3rd. I don't have any orders yet, I guess I will know where I wil be stationed when I get to reception in Korea. How is South Korea? Do you like it? Do you have your family there?
Yes I love Korea and I love being in Korea. I am an unusual case though. Usually when you talk to people who have been stationed in Korea they say "either you love it or you hate it." But United States Forces Korea is in a huge transitional phase right now and they're trying to make it family friendly. In my opinion it has never been better to bring family here. As a 92Y you could be stationed anywhere though. Ask your recruiter about command sponsorship, and don't let him bullshit you, you CAN get command sponsorship BEFORE pcsing to Korea. I am an inprocessing cycle NCO for my batallion and I get so many soldiers who were told by misinformed NCOs at their last duty stations that they must wait until they get to Korea to get command sponsorship.
SGT Smitty, he is going to MEPS, he doesnt even know if he will be going to Korea...and no he cannot get station of choice so he probably wont be going to Korea...
Lead by Example!!! Whats the difference between a SGT and a SGT(P)? I have a chance at getting promoted soon!!! hehehehe
