My son is in eod and about to be deployed. How can I keep up to date with his whereabouts and how he is during this deployment? I've never been through this before and am very worried. He is my only son.

Every unit should have an FRG (Family Readiness Group). The job of the FRG is to keep family members up to date on things going with the deployed unit. Usually they stay in contact with the spouse of the soldier. In your case, (i'm assuming he isn't married), they would stay in contact with you. The primary means of contact is usually through e-mail. They may also call in some instances. Also, his unit may have a web site that you could log onto to see what they are doing over there.
You will have to ask your son to put you on the FRG contact list. He should know what you are talking about.
Also, I'm in Iraq right now. As you probably can tell, I have internet access. Most places he could go over here have phones and internet. The lines can be long sometimes though. Some places however do not have these ammenities. If that is the case the FRG should still be able to keep you up to date.

Thank you so much for the info. I will contact him and ask this question about the FRG. Please take care of yourself and know that I am thinking of you!

My husband is in Iraq, and he's been able to call me pretty much every day. Some days, he will get online and we'll chat. I was even able to see him because the computers have webcams. Of course, it depends on where he will be stationed, but SGT HAMMY is right - most places now have Internet access, telephones, etc. Depending on where your son would be, he may be able to get Internet in his room, as my husband did, CableTV (limited channels), telephone, etc.

As far as mail goesn, I send him packages all the time, and he receives them in a week. I will recommend using the Prioroty Box because it's a flat rate of $8.10, regardless of weight. His mail gets longet to reach me, I imagine that the guys there wait till they get a certain amount of mail before shipping.

I have been pleased with communication and mail. I hope you will be able to experience the same. Good luck to you and your son!

My fiance' called me everyday he wasn't on a mission. They also have sattelite capabilities for wireless (but you have to wander around camp for a signal).
If you sent a package, line it with plastic bags/place everything in plastic bags.

My husband is Infantry too (Army). He has been away for about 4 months and was home recently for R&R, which was simply intense for both of us - having both of our families here, friends, and trying to fit everyone and everything into just 2 wks. I hope you get to hear from your grandaughter soon!Smiler Was their dad in the military as well?

Hi Peggy -

I, too, have a granddaughter in the Army. She is still in AIT at Goodfellow AFB. She's a 98C and just received orders for her first duty station in Hawaii. You'll find this is a good place to bring questions and get support. I've learned so much just reading posts. I'm a former AF wife so a lot of it is familiar.

Welcome and let your granddaughter know how proud we are of her.

Her Company should have an FRG set up. The way it works with our FRG is, they have an email list and news and information regarding my husbands company is forwared to me via email. Also, a soldier is doing a daily news report from my husband's camp, so I signed up. The information comes from the actual place where my husband is, so I receive information such as weather, news; aslo, information on his Division and casualties, all in 1 email. So, I would recommend contacting the FRG leader PeggySmiler

It seems that your family has a large military history. My ex-boss was a retired Colonel from the Marine Corps. When I married my husband he said to me: What, Marines are not good enough for you? Great sense of humorSmiler
