Hello...I have a few questions. My daughters father is going to be going to basic training and then Advanced training RIGHT after...with no break in between. He seems convinced that this is so he can get a quicker start to his career...but I kinda doubt that is the reason. He is also convinced that he will NOT be going to Iraq or anywhere for that matter because he is working with "computers." I am just wondering how quickly after training is over are soldiers getting deployed. I am also wondering how this back to back training is going to play into getting "leave" for Christmas, or if you think it is possible at all. He is in the Army National Guard.

it's normal to go straight from basic to advanced training. And he will get two weeks off during the Christmas holiday. Those drill sergeants don't want to be stuck there for the holidays anymore than he does.

And they need computer guys in Iraq, too. I'm not saying he will deploy right away, btu it's always a possibility. My brother is a computer guy and been in a little over two years and hasn't deployed. I'm a writer, been in almost 3 and haven't either. but I know guys who deployed right after AIT. It's all just luck of the draw.

My advice is to worry aout that when the time comes, if it comes. And I'm not just saying this as a Soldier. I'm a Marine wife as well with my hubby deployed.

Perhaps he doesn't know this, but it doesn't matter what a soldier's job is; he/she could still get deployed. No one can say at what point that will be or how soon after AIT. Also, one MOS is no "safer" than another. After all, that is the whole reason for all the training. And with the active role that the Guard has been playing in Iraq, he would probably be better off expecting to go. But like Frosty said, don't worry about it 'til you have to!

Where is he going to basic? I don't know about the other bases, but Ft. Jackson's holiday block leave is from 19 Dec to 3 Jan.

Hhhmmmm, recruiter....I think that could be the one MOS that I could possibly think of that doesn't actually deploy. I know the Army needs people to join, but don't think that we are at the point where we will start going after Iraqis.

Actually, a recruiter cannot be made out of basic. You have to be in for a few years, be an NCO, and be accepted as a candidate.

Actually there have been recruiters who deployed to Iraq. They went over there as consultants to help set up recruiting stations there.
