I will be heading Ft Riley this summer. How do I request a school date for WLC? I just found out that I must attend in the states instead of in USAREUR due to the fact that I was passed over due to a deployment and had to leave with the main body instead of being part of rear-d and attending the school.

Talk to your platoon Chain of Command and that will settle the problem.

I served at FT Riley back in the 80,s and early 90,s. Back then it was called PLDC not WLC. Get with chain of command. GOOD LUCK !

Just remember that it is your gaining units responsibility to send you to WLC since you will be PCS'ing. Your gaining unit will finance your school through their budget. So all your current unit can do is maybe contact your gaining unit to see if they can get you on their schools OML a little bit early before you report. Unless your unit can get you TDY in route, which is a possibility. But thats just a couple options , maybe your unit will come up with something that will get you to school soon.

Will do. I can tough out living in the barracks there until I get back from WLC. I plan on reporting early anyway and insist on being put on the OML. I will let them know that i do not want any soldiers at all until I finish that school. I owe it to myself and to those soldiers.

I believe this decision shows your higher level of integrity. This kind of thinking will make you a great leader. Too many people want the chevron to have power and money. You will also be a good influence on your future soldiers and improve the quality of Army leadership.

Look up Ft Riley on the web. Find the number for the welcome center/in-processing. Then dial up the OFF-POST Housing section, and ask em.

It sounds like something you want your info straight from the Horse's mouth on that one. I know I would.

If you are not at Riley already... I would SERIOUSLY recommend flying out and taking a look at some places to live RIGHT NOW. Because you're going to be fighting between the military people AND the college kids... And the prices are rather ridiculous compared to what we get for BAH. I have been seeing quite a few places open up lately - so you may have better luck than we did.

And when you see a comment on the Riley page about being prepared to housing space that is WELL under what you may be used to... they weren't kidding. When we moved into our house - we couldn't fit all of our furniture in. So, I'd just recommend staying flexible.

And I almost hate to say it - it's almost better to live on-post. We live in Manhattan and it's a 30 minute drive every day - which isn't bad, but if you have to keep running back to post for this that and the occasional Soldier issue - it gets long. One day, I was in the car for three hours just traveling between post and home because I had to run home in the middle of the day to get my class As.

Just as with everything else - preplanning is the best thing here. And no pets (I think the area has some sort of thing against pets... practically no one allows them unless you get your own house)
