i have a soldier who is 13 months away from his ets date. this soldier is almost certain that he isn't going to stay in. i understand that he needs to see the retention nco before leaving, but our lt is almost using his rank to make him go now. he told another nco to take him to reenlistment. can this lt do this? the soldier should be able to go whenever he wants to...other soldiers are closer to their ets dates but they haven't been bothered by this lt. if the lt is wrong i want to have something to back my statements up with and i want to get him off my soldiers back.

As explained in this post Reenlistment Counseling Sessions a Soldier is required to see the Company Commander or Career Counselor at certain times throughout their careers.

Are YOU talking to your Soldiers about reenlstment? If not, why not?

You said yourself "Soldier is almost certain that he isn't going to stay in."

You should go with the Soldier to see the Career Counselor. You should be as involved as you can when it comes to your Soldiers and the reenlstment process. Stop fighting it and looking for ways out of it. You have to help maintain the force.

There is normally one Career Counselor for every 500 or more Soldiers. We can't do it alone (although sometimes it feels like it).

I can't even count how many poeple I've know that were positive they were getting out, and ended up re-enlisting days and even hours before they ETS'd. You can never be sure.

Wow, I think this whole point was missed.

If you're not obeying a direct/lawful order to do what you're told (go see the Career Counselor), of course the LT would use his rank. I would recommend STOP disobeying his order and see the Career Counselor. Besides, it'll only make you and your Soldier smarter.

The Career Counselor will provide you with a lot of useful information, whether you stay in or ETS. No one is going to twist your arm to have someone reenlist. We know we can't keep 100% of Soldiers in anyway. You wouldn't need recruits then.

But some Soldiers get tired and just want to go home especially when their retention is not telling them the truth and with holding information for their, "Buddies."

Career Counselors don't really have "Buddies" they save anything for. We are a completely different MOS and CMF than our Soldiers.

All current Reenlistment information can be found at http://www.ArmyReenlistment.com/ or you can tell Soldiers to come to this board and ask a question. I, along with all other Career Counselor work for the Soldier. We are NOT recruiters and we don't hide information. Soldiers are much smarter and can seen straight through a smoke-screen and can raise the bull-s%$# flag at anytime.
